Three states would suit, divided along the natural divisions within the Philippines. In the north, those who speak Tagalog, mostly on the island of Luzon, where Manila is located. The central region known as the Visayas, with the state capitol of Cebu. Lastly the southern island of Mindanao, I guess the state capitol would be Cagayan de Oro. Mindanao has 5-6 million moslems fighting a seperatist war. That would be a problem.

The thing is, the US would then be a majority Catholic country. The prots might get a little antsy about that. It's going to happen anyway, but I wonder whether they would want to speed the process to such a dramatic degree.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Did it say anywhere in the article that this group was in favor of a reunion with the USA? I thought they just wanted to welcome back our soldiers, sailors and flyboys.
Actually I read an article recently that claimed that 2nd and 3rd generation Mexican-Americans tended to drift away from traditional Catholicism towards evangelical protestant sects."I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!

The organizer of the march, the United States Supporters' Alliance, advocates the largely unpopular idea of the Philippines returning to the U.S. colonial embrace.
There y'are. I guess this would mean to be protectorate of the US, or a commonwealth in free association with the US.

I wouldn't doubt it. There is a strong hispanic evangelical protestant movement, even in Mexico, IIRC. But I would guess that more stay catholic than change, at least nominally. The %-age of catholics of the US population has grown from 28% or so in 1989 to 37% or so in 2003, IIRC. This trend will probably continue.Last edited by DanS; July 5, 2003, 13:02.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. Would it take a referendum in the US to add the Phils?
No. It just takes an Act of Congress by majority vote. Really easy to become a state.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. The US wouldn't want the Phils as a state anyway. Too far away.Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

The chances of the US congress accepting to add circa 90 million phillipinos to the state are somewhere between absolute zero and absolute zero+1*10(-50).If you don't like reality, change it! me

The Phillipines are a sovreign country. It takes a treaty, which requires 2/3rd Senate vote.
As far as I know, no immediate treaty would be needed. All we would have to do is declare it our property--no act of Congress necessary. The details would then be worked out, which might include a treaty, but might not.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. DanS we left the Phils after the locals waged a long, drawnout bloody rebellion we couldn't put down.
Z, I'm gonna call Bull**** on this one. The rebellion took place in 1899-02. Afterwich, the US ruled in (basically) peace until the US gave the islands their independance on July 4th, 1946 (which was actually planned for 10 years... ie, a transitional period was set up so it would be like other colonizers just picking up and leaving).
While there were indepedence parties in the Phillipines after 1902, there was no armed revolution. It was all accomplished peacefully.
I know the US did some bad things around the world, but we don't need to make EVERY US involvement be seen as evil.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
