GePap: I think there is a trust that the US is competent for the task and that Bush's words are backed with action. If Bush says Taylor must go, then he's gone. This impression was enhanced by the 3-week asskicking we gave a 350k standing army. All of what you mention is true (except that only a minority speaks English, even if it is the official language), but it only supports why they would want us there.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I am sorry, but I doubt this highly. Bush already called for Taylor to leave and yet he remians there, and while we may have beat Iraq, no one in the US will back a plan to oust Tylor: we will go in only having an agreement for him to leave.

Bush's credibility is not stellar: the point is power. The US has power, and it is the only one of the major powers that might get involved. Even without Iraq people in liberai would be calling for the US to step in and do something, not the English (who by the way participated in this as kicking of Iraq and yet I don't see thier names mentioned).

You are reading too much "Iraq" into a situation were it is of minor importance at MOST. There are a lot more improtant factos at work, form thel liberian perspective, Where Iraq matters more is from the US side: now that the US has set up this notion of improving the world by force well, put your money were your mouth is.

Sure it is. Does anybody doubt he will do what he says he will do, and then that he will stay the course?

"I don't think we should worry about America's prestige so much. Despite was some may say, America is looked at as a more reliable power after Iraq than before. This is reflected in the fact that everybody wants us in Liberia. And anyways, fvck France. The UN needs to get back into our good graces. Not the other way around."

Well, I have no doubt our position and reliability as a power after going into Iraq, but it wouldn't hurt to do something humanitarian to help bring us back as a good guy in the eyes of the world. And France is a major power and it would be nice to avoid a hostile relationship.

As far as the UN, I don't think we should be getting back in its good graces, rather I think intervention will help further undermine the UN.

            Screw the U.N.
I really hate to see the USA involved with a nation of 3 million population that's one of the poorest countries in the world.

Didn't Taylor just (again) announce today that he's going to leave?

Maybe putting troops into Liberia will make you-know-who forget about sending them to certain Middle Eastern countries.

So Drake: Bush says he has to step down, and Taylor says yes, conditionally? Wow, shows how Bush's word is GOD! As Spiff says, hopefully this time he means it (unlike when the joined the ceasefire calling him to quit).

from the times: (yes Drake, that times)http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/inter...l-liberia.html

DanS: Bush;s credibility is not great: he said he would get Osama, Saddam, have a New Martial plan for Afghnistan. and Iraq. NOt delivered on any of those yet. Good thing Liberians are too poor to afford to watch international cable news.

It's more than anyone else has accomplished. Why do you have to be so negative?

Anyone else? Taylor is losing the war, signs a peace deal which calls for him to resign, one most of the world backs, cause taylor is a bastard. The international community starts calling for the US to send troops, Bush decides to consider it and syas that Taylor has to live up to what he signed and for peace to return he has to leave. taylor vacilates, and now he says he will leave, once the whole troop deployment is set, as to "avoid chaos". I am glad Bush is considerring sending troops, it is a good move. BUt right now Taylor is buying time for himself. I will be happy when he actually does leave.
