That's because every night you fight with your demon until all of the evil in you comes out on your "special towel".

This is a patently ineffective technique in a standup fight between experienced combatants. It is a very simple matter to prevent someone from kicking you in the nuts. If anything it leaves the kicker in a vulnerable position to be taken down. I don't recommend kicks above the knees against an opponent who knows how to grapple, and it's not a great technique against an opponent who is primarily a striker either, unless you have already opened them up by knocking them off-balance.

You guys assume a "guys fight" with punching, why not a "kick him in the nuts, bite him hard and draw blood, and then cut him with somehting sharp" kind of fight?
I've never "let" anyone punch me, Irish standdown is a loser's game if there ever was one. But in general I agree with your main point, that it is foolish in the extreme to underestimate or minimize your opponent. My main judo partner in college was a 3 time U.S. champion in her weight division. She could do some seriously deadly damage to someone who thought she was just another girl. That said, I wasn't particularly afraid of her either. Even on my first day in the dojo I was quicker, faster, stronger than she was at about the same weight. Within a few weeks she found it very difficult to score a point on me (admittedly the opposite was also true). By the end of my first year in judo I was getting the upper hand on her. I'm a good athlete, but not nearly as successful within my peer group as she. I have to put a lot of the rapidity with which we became competitive off on our gender difference.

Another source of fighting knowledge is good old experience, and there are a lot of women who got plenty by having brothers, or living in a bad neighborhood or in a physically abusive family.

Fights are usually a matter of 2-3 good punches and sometimes a bit of grappling, all of which rely almost exclusively on the upper-body strength you dismiss so casually. Flexibility doesn't get you anywhere when some guy's forearm is locked around your throat.
You seem to be living in an area fond of boxing. I've been in a lot of fights over the years, and no one has ever managed to hit me 2-3 times. This is because I throw them on to the ground (usually with the energy of their first and last attempt to hit me with their fist), and then get them into a stranglehold. With grappling upper body strength is brought more into line with leg strength, abdominal strength and flexibility. Flexibility allows you to escape from your opponent's holds while keeping them from escaping yours, but it is rarely in play in the crucial first seconds of a fight as you say.

Did you ever face any amount of stigma from that action form people in your community?

Shi: Nope....in fact, it was generally regarded as the best play I could have made under the circumstances (sound asleep, she--a psycho ex girlfriend who had been stalking me for a couple months and generally making life miserable--breaks into my apartment and comes at me with those claws, I wake up, try to bind her arms to her side, didn't have much luck (and earned a nasty gash on my face, courtesy of those claws), so I untangled myself from the covers and tried again, still didn't have any luck, so I gave her one to the chin.

She "sat down" abruptly in the chair beside the bed, and was much more reasonable afterward (and I kept my eyeballs where they were, which I was fairly pleased about).

Interesting. Maybe this is different in some parts of the North then in the South. I remember in an earlier thread, che said someone who hits a woman is the lowest of the low in Chicago, and Chris 62 of New York said someone who hits a woman was a rat bastard no matte what.

Everyone thinks they could never hit a woman. Then some find their instinct for self-preservation is stronger than their desire for chivalry.

                    • I agree with Laz....I mean, yes, I did it. Once. Didn't like it, but also didn't see any viable alternatives. What? I'm gonna run away from my own place?

                      I don't think so.

Nor does my response to her attack mean that I'm a foaming-at-the-mouth mad dog who goes on the prowl looking for people to beat on (male or female).

The problem at hand demanded an immediate solution. There was a crazy woman in my house who had crawled in through the window and was intent on carving my eyeballs out with her long, wicked fingernails.

I tried other solutions, and when they didn't work, I decided that a quick engagement was better than a protracted one and took steps to bring things to a close. Not by using overpowering force (which I could have done), but by using a sufficient amount of force to stop the attack and spare my eyeballs.

At the end of the day, if that makes me a rat ba$****....at least I can go to bed knowing I'm a rat ba$**** who can still see, thanks to appropriate use of force when the situation demanded it...

                      • I put equal rights, because men shouldn't be getting hit either. It's never okay to hit anyone except in legitimate self-defense or yourself or someone else.

                        • I've never heard anyone in New York ever say that anyone who hits a womna under any circumstances is a rat bastard: might be only a few ethnic niehgborhoods.

Stopping someone from attacking you is acceptable all the time.

Or somebody else, for that matter.
