Hitting people is always wrong, realistically, self-defence when your own life is threatened is ok, but most women wouldnt represent a physical threat to even an adolescent boy, unless armed with a weapon.

...though having said that, many cases of domestic violence against women are precipitated by women striking the man first, then he loses it and strikes back, which does more damage to her.

In that respect, I stand by the idea that violence is always wrong.

I do think we need to give some attention to the concern that in a difficult situation like an argument, women generally are more likely to lose their cool, lose rationality and possibly even strike out. Is that a fair statement? (ignore the fact that it is of course a stereotypical generalisation, I'm talking about a significant fraction of women).

It's only OK to hit women if they're old or you know you can whoop 'em. If they don't fit either catagory just push 'em down a flight of stairs.

If I think I'm in real physical danger I will defend myself physically, and I won't go looking for an Adam's Apple first.

I don't have secret ninja training, so that self-defence consists of rather basic and panicky lashing out.

violence is completely uncalled for in any case except self-defence and critical defence of immediate friends and family.

if one's life is being threatened, it matters not who is doing the threatening. self-preservation/preservation of close relations in this case would be the higher "moral imperative".

I didn't like it (felt like ****e after), but yep...she got a (single) jab to the jaw, which made her sit down rather abruptly and took all the fight out of her.

Didn't like it, but I also didn't like the prospect of bein' blind in one (or both) eyes, so if put in the situation again, and having exhausted other options, I'd surely respond the exact same way.

I am just as likely to hit a woman as I am to hit a man. This is probably synonymous with "never", but whatever.:P

Equal rights mean equal rights to be hit.

It's part of equal rights, you can't hide behind being the 'weaker sex'. If you want to be equal, then you have to accept that you are going to be hit for the same things that men are hit for.

I often wonder why on television shows -- especially the soap operas -- that it's tolerable for angry women to slap men, but it would be seen as ugly violence if angry men slap women.

Reverse sexism or what? Just this little bit that I have wondered about. Reverse sexism as in, it's fine that men are subjected to violence, after all they're "tough," but women's lives are more valuable than men, so they cannot be exposed to the same violence.

Most of the time, when a woman slaps a man, it's just a minor sting. However, most women won't be able to take a slap from a man.

I think GePap has a good point here, it should be more like "strong" vs "weak" instead of "men" vs "women."
