Bismark, indeed. ( he did create a force that was cause of the bloodiest wars in history, but that's a wholly different debate. )

Azazel, thats only half true. The foundation of Prussia's militarism is being pissed of by Swedes and French during and after the 30 years war. Bismarck was one of the smartest builders of the force. Then, Wilhelm II lost sense for realitites ...Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?

Historical:
Stalin. He took an almost feudal patchwork of peoples decimated by two vicious wars and in the span of years forged a nation that was for a time at the pinacle of development and the leader in space. Amazing guy. But utterly ruthless.
Today:
McCain. Almost reasonable for a Republican. Discovered the whole money = corruption thing in politics (after his own involvement with Keating though).
Jesse Ventura: too libertarian for me, but gave a voice to the coalition of fed up people in MN. Did crazy stuff, and was a giant **** in the face of the political establishment.
Fidel Castro: amazing what that guy does with nothing.- "A picture may be worth a thousand words, but it still ain't a part number." - Ron Reynolds

Historical: Count Camillo de Cavour. I have so much respect for a guy who with almost nothing to offer, and little to work with, but managed to all but run the government as the lowest ranked minister, getting concessions out of the French and Austrians. He was skillful enough to take all of Northern Italy by diplomatic skill. An absolute genius, from a time when people borrowed Britains progressive and before-their-time policies.
Today: I respect Alistair Campbell for managing to convince the nation to back Blair, when they disagree with most things that he says. Most of the politicians I respect I agree with though, like Joshka Fischer, who manages to have the only Green Party I've ever heard of that has offical power on a national scale. A massive acheivement, considering the UK Green Party can't even win 1 seat.Smile
For though he was master of the world, he was not quite sure what to do next
But he would think of something
