Although I'm guessing that this is the wrong lesson to take away from this thread, I am now thoroughly convinced that being gay increases your chances of being gruesomely murdered by some psycho. I'm glad I swing towards the fairer (and less homicidal) sex.

SK's go where the victims are. Prostitutes are the highest-risk group because it's their profession to go with complete strangers to private locations for sex.

Many gays also have (or used to have) sex with strangers, which provides many opportunities for a killer to claim someone. Gays are also more accustomed to being surreptitious in their liaisons, providing greater anonymity for the killer.

I've often wondered why more hetero women weren't picked up by SKs at clubs and bars. While it does happen, I think they caught on to the fact that it was extremely dangerous to run off with a strange man before the gay crowd did. It seems (and I've never been part of the bar/club crowd, so I can't say from experience) that women are more likely to learn something about their potential one-sight-stand, like if he's a regular, etc.

I think the gay crowd has become more cautious about these risks. At least, you don't see the huge bodycounts for gay SKs like you did before - Gacy (33), Eyler (25), Kearney (27) Bonin (10+), Kraft (16+, possibly 67), etc. Dahmer (17) will likely be the last high bodycount gay murderer for a little while.

However, I've heard that some young gay men are no longer even taking the standard precautions against AIDS anymore, so they might be exposing themselves to greater risk of being murdered for shits and giggles. Can anyone from Poly's gay community confirm or deny greater risk-taking behaviors among the younger crowd?

Che, aren't you from Chicago? Doesn't that sorta guarentee that there would be a serial killer close by?

Probably because the SKs don't like the competition from all the others creeps at the bar

Serial killers are sex criminals, so naturally the crimes are going to be related to sex in their nature. The Ripper didn't slice his victims from vagina to breasts because he was interested in anatomy. Psychologists point on that such people are outsiders, people who feel so removed from society that they hate it and have this disconnect where they feel the urge to take out their fury on targets. For a gay killer, the anger is probably even more intense.

Gay SKs found easy prey, yes, by the nature of the gay underworld, particularly among closeted young men who were intent on being secretive, or those who were drug addicts.

However, you'll see from any survey that the vast majority of SK victims have been women. Bundy killed perhaps as many as 37 women, and others have had higher body counts . Pedro Lopez killed over 300 girls, Harold Shipman perhaps 150, Bruno Ludke over 80, Andrei Chikatilo 52...

Women are still a bit more vulnerable to such predators, because there is still the difference that women will in general have a harder time putting up a fight against an assailant.

Yes and no. Chicago seems to have a disproportionate number of SKs that hunt gays, and since I had a lot of friends in Chicago's gay community, it stands to reason I'd know people affected. That's why I don't really consider Eyler as that much of a coincidence. Dahmer, on the other hand, killed someone I had actually met and the best friend of someone I knew periferally.

Drake, acutally, being a woman is far more likely to get you killed than being gay, especially prostitutes. There was an Indiana SK who killed women he picked up in clubs, and this guy here in Jax was killing women.

Gacy and the guy in Atlanta targetted young men and boys.

There are a tiny handful of female SKs who target men, so don't think you're safe.

You seem to know a lot about SK's, Boris. Have you checked out the new book about the Ripper by the forensic investigator who claims he was Walter Sickert?

I used to love watching Forensic Files and the like. It's certainly a fascinating subject.

Actually, when I was in London I did a Ripper walking tour, and the guy who did it is among the foremost "Ripperologists," Donald Rumbelow. I have just read his book, and while a bit old (1975), it's one of the most comprehensive looks at the murders and suspects. Rumbelow is a former policeman, so that is the perspective he takes things from.

I think Rumbelow said it best that, in all likelihood, we will just never know who the Ripper was. He said something like, "I suspect that, should there be a Day of Judgment and all the mysteries of the universe are revealed to us, when Ripperologists ask God who the culprit was and He answers, we will all say, 'who?'"

Modern theories are fanciful, but I strongly expect nobody has ever fingered the real Ripper. There were so many nameless, forgotten people in Victorian London that the odds of having pinpointed the killer are slim.

They lifted some mitocondrial DNA off one of the Ripper's letters and matched it to several letters connected to Walter Sickert.

JohnT, while you may not actually be indanger of meeting a real serial killer, you've met someone who plays one on TV. After all, what is a vampire really but a serial killer? William the Bloody signed your baby.

I wonder if two gay serial killers ever met at a bar and tried to get the other one to go out with them again, and again. and again?

Actually, that sounds like the starting plot for a comedy.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

Patricia Cornwell's theory is actually full of holes, and the DNA evidence isn't conclusive by any means:
