I didn't think much of Pullman, to be honest. And yes I did read the first book - I don't know if the later ones were any better since I didn't bother to read them after the first one failed to impress me.

I admit that the whole thing about the animal spirits that each child has (or something like that ... it was a while ago) was interesting and original. However the book seemed rather souless to me. It was no fun - didn't have that "one more page" feeling for me that I've gotten with every Potter book.

The mileage of others may (and DOES) vary, of course. I think I'm in the minority in much preferring Rowling to Pullman (of adults who have read both).

Slightly more expensive than buying it from the shops because of the P&P, but at least I won't have to queue up for hours to get it.

I heard on the radio this morning that Asda and Tesco are both selling it for under a tenner - despite a RRP of £16.99

I've had to review it. It's not very good, but then again I'm not a fan of most childrens books.

To paraphrase Nietzche "Those [adults] who read childrens books.. usually have something wrong with their sexual organs".

          Spoiler edited out by ming.

That was just mean posting that EK... use the spoiler feature in the future so people have a CHOICE if they want to know.

Fair enough. The best thing about the trilogy is that it increases in scale and scope with each book. Starts off as a small scale story but ends up absolutely massive.

I found it very good in a page turny aspect.

That's out of order Evil, if it's true edit it out before anyone else sees it. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you should spoil it for other people.

What's wrong with reading something you enjoy? Nothing.

I think I'll give it another go some day, maybe after I've finished the new HP.

and by the way the books are excellent.

Well-plotted, filled with humour, well-developed characters, and some very insightful lines about courage, dealing with depression, etc

Much better than most popular fiction for adults.

but thats what evil does - evil spoils the joy of others - Like the dementors, who live on happiness by destroying it - who suck it out of you and leave you numb and empty (JK has admitted that the dementors are modeled on depression)
