Can someone explain to me why you people in Britain think that Homer Simpson is the greatest American? He is a cartoon and is dumb and fat on the show. I dont understand that at all, it makes no sense. HE DOES NOT EVEN EXIST!!!

Did you not read my post above?
And I'll point out that its not a British survey, its an internet poll being hosted by the BBC. Also, for many, Homer Simpson is probably the most famous American character. One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

Dissident, old chap?
Do you not feel you are undermining your own case by having as one of your choices for "greatest American" named as "That other guy"?The genesis of the "evil Finn" concept- Evil, evil Finland

Went for Luther..Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

Plus he's very popular as being a more true to life character than just about any US President, musician (Elvis had a dark side, remember) or actor that gets airtime.
Not that surprising if you think about it.Some cry `Allah O Akbar` in the street. And some carry Allah in their heart.

You should be happy, Homer represents the common american so we're saying how great you guys are for giving us so much to mockLearn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

Bill Clinton? Come on!! Sure he's a progressive, but FDR was also a progressive- and he accomplished a whole lot more. Exactly what did Clinton accomplish? *crickets chirp*
It was a tough call voting for Martin Luther King jr. over the founding fathers. Both did great things. They stood up for what they believed was right against massive opposition from the other side. King had the greatest risk to his life only matched by George Washington I'd say. So it was a close call choosing him over George Washington.
