Yeah, my current employers are looking at expanding my role and utilising my skills more...but the fact of the matter is, unless they are willing to take me off this temporary contract and give me a substantial pay rise, I will not accept...

Though the flip side is you gain more experience using your other skills as well, so it pays off in the long run.
You could also keep the job you have now, while looking for a better one.

aarrgh... Job Security is well important unless you are earning top $$
Back to the Original topic I dont handle 9-5 very well either. I used to do 9-5:30 every day and i coudnt handle that - was always tired in the evening and hated getting up in the AM. My gf has the kinda pattern I'd like tho, 9-4:30 with 30 mins lunch, making a 35 hour week - could deal with that.

Well this is the perculiarity of the company...they just don't pay people enough and hence they have a very high turnover of employees...I would do the job but I wouldn't stay unless they made me a substantial offer which they won't do. If they are not prepared to retain the talent at their disposal, then it is bye bye...

Still, you should keep your job until you find a better one.

Well how can I negotiate a better deal out of them? I know they are short staffed and the only person who has ever been able to run the archives effectively? I have a certain stronghold on their balls but how do I exploit that?

Okay, how essential is the archives? Or, put it in another way, how much money did you save them by running the archives effectively? Make an estimation, than bargain with your employer with some solid figures.
