When I was a kid, we never locked the doors. I have now taken over my parents house, but these days I lock my doors, because there have been some burglars in my block. Our house is not inviting to burglary because of high hedges and an evil dog, but you never know...

When I was about 20-25, I lived in neighbourhoods were locked doors were really necessary to prevent bums from sleeping on my door mat (literally). It happened to me several times that I had to kick some drunk 50 year old finnish-speaking bum out of my apartment by brute violence whenever I forgot to lock my door. Strangely enough, the bums spoke Finnish regardless if I lived in Sweden or Finland.

Security system and dogs who'll eat anything that moves (they're not vicious they're just hungry buggers). Despite that we leave the doors unlocked all the time. There hasnt been a violent crime around here in many years (we're all armed).

I grew up with a couple largish dogs as pets so we never locked our doors unless we were leaving for an extended period of time. The dogs were loyal and kept the riff-raff away.
