  • "Aargh! My ears!" or, Worst Cover Ever

I'm sure I'm behind the times on this, but grading final exams has kept me away from TV for a while. Anyway, last night my daughter was watching MTV and subjected us both to what is, without a doubt, the worst cover I've ever heard. I don't mean William-Shatner-"Mr.-Tambourine-Man" bad, because that's so bad it's funny and was never meant to be taken seriously anyway. I mean bad in the sense that it's not only bad in itself, but does horrific violence to one of the greatest songs ever -- possibly the most achingly romantic song in the history of rock 'n' roll -- AND we're supposed to take it seriously.

I give you, then, the Worst Cover Ever: Celine Dion's synth-pop dance cover of Roy Orbison's "I Drove All Night." My ears are still bleeding.

I've not heard that, so I wouldn't know. Top of my "worst cover" list at the moment (and no, I don't consider the originals all that great (except #3), but still): #1 - Louise, "Stuck in the Middle With You"; #2 - All Saints, "Under The Bridge"; #3 - Pascal feat. Karen Parry, "I Think We're Alone Now".

Oh ****ing hell yes. She's signed a helluva big-paying contract to do a five-year-long stint at a Vegas casino, Elvis-style.

Yeah, both the Spears' choices are good, too. But, really, listen to Orbison's original (if you don't know it), then listen to this thing. Ugh.

And, Buck, I've heard that "Stuck in the Middle with You" cover; this edges it out IMO, but just barely. Double-ugh.

Avril's Chop Suey cover. There is no option.

OK now I have to listen. Her Fuel cover wasn't toooo bad.

let me check this one out.

                            I'm utterly speechless just about.

                            Chop Suey

well from the version I got- which I suspect that is the only version there is, it's from a live perfomance in front of a small crowd of people. It sounds very unrehearsed.

It is bad, very bad. Although it does get better when she sings slower. But when she tries to do the fast part, she is so horrible to the point of being hilarious.

this cover easily without a doubt wins the worst cover ever awards.
