My mom said that her life was better under the Democrats (Carter and Clinton) than under the Republicans. She and My Dad allways say that when a republican is in office the rich got richer and the poor get poorer. My family on both sides has been socialist ever since they came to the US.

Ned, would you care to remind us about the "Everyone in the world is lying! All the Iraqis are in it too!!! It's a conspiracy.....But this ONE journalist is telling us the truth in Iraq, and that is: There are no bad things happening The Americans are glorious Everyone else is LYING "
Tass, Do you even care about the truth? I think you extreme lefties would approach the question of whether there are four fingers or five from Orwell's 1984 with the quick answer that the boss was holding up five fingers if that is what he told you to he was holding up.

I am sure, Odin, that you and your family owe nothing to private enterprise, right?

Smoking tobacco and smoking pot are two different things.

The best anology is defending one's right to drink alcohol until one is "stoned." If this is legal, why not pot?

Well, once we tried to ban alcohol and produced crime and corruption instead. We were forced to legalize it once more, even though there seems still to be a consensus that getting stoned on alcohol is not desirable socially.

If you ever doubt what I just said, try to imagine living with an alocholic spouse or parent. It is a horrible experience.

Nah, my parents aren't a factor here. Mom passed away years ago and I don't ever see my father. Everyone in my family is Republican anyway. And die-hard Catholics to boot. Irish and Italians roots, you know. My uncle and cousins are cops and my brother is an ex-Marine now in college to become (he hopes) an officer. Very big Bush supporters.

I don't know anything about it. There are no Indian reservations in Missouri that I am aware of, so I have no concerns regarding the issue. I am completely descended from fairly recent immigrants, who stole no land from the Indians and placed no one on reservations, so I don't think of it as my problem. I feel for these people about their plight, but it simply isn't my problem.

Are you insane??? My community is not broken up, and my city has a TREMENDOUS amount of control over the school. And don't even get me STARTED on our school pride. All the federal government does is give money... You are insane - verifiably insane.
I congratulate you on you excellent school system, but I think you may be out of touch with the actual reality for most American school children.

Nor is it meant to be. I am simply stating my position. Personally, I do not see liberalism as evil, as so many of my conservative brethen like to pretend. I believe good government is achieved through a dialectical negotiation between the two ideologies.

On the other hand, I think they have gotten too big for their brtiches and it's time to crush them into submission. I'm tired of constant whining and protesting. Just because you have free speech it doesn't mean I want to hear you.

interestingly (or perhaps, not very ) i was fairly left wing when i was younger, but have gotten a lot more conservative recently.

i think it's partly because i come from a working class family, since labour have come to power we have seen higher taxes, with nothing to show for it. the classes in my younger sisters' schools are the same size as mine were, you still wait a bloody age in A&E and yet we pay a lot more for the privilage. i suppose it's also partly because i live in the countryside now, and it's quite shocking to see how much the left hates us, the fox hunting issue and ever increasing petrol prices being prime examples. uni has also been a big factor, as iain will tell you, student organisations are almost without exception hard left, there is something that leaves a sour taste in the mouth about an organisation which is supposed to represent the student body going around swansea shouting about defending traitor MP george galloway or 'war crimes' in iraq (and, of course, not saying anything critical about the brutal regime that we removed...).

Well, I wish I had time to respond to every post individually, but I'm in quite a rush today. I'd like to thank everyone for their input, both pro and con.

You've given me a lot to think about.
