My mom said that her life was better under the Democrats (Carter and Clinton) than under the Republicans. She and My Dad allways say that when a republican is in office the rich got richer and the poor get poorer. My family on both sides has been socialist ever since they came to the US.

Isn't it always conservatives who are standing up for the right to smoke tobacco? Isn't it always conservatives who take money from Coors?
What's that sound in your head, Static Universe? I think its cognitive dissonace.
The best anology is defending one's right to drink alcohol until one is "stoned." If this is legal, why not pot?
Well, once we tried to ban alcohol and produced crime and corruption instead. We were forced to legalize it once more, even though there seems still to be a consensus that getting stoned on alcohol is not desirable socially.
If you ever doubt what I just said, try to imagine living with an alocholic spouse or parent. It is a horrible experience.http://tools.wikimedia.de/~gmaxwell/jorbis/JOrbisPlayer.php?path=John+Williams+The+Imperial+M arch+from+The+Empire+Strikes+Back.ogg&wiki=en

Are you insane??? My community is not broken up, and my city has a TREMENDOUS amount of control over the school. And don't even get me STARTED on our school pride. All the federal government does is give money... You are insane - verifiably insane.Last edited by Static Universe; June 10, 2003, 08:10."We are living in the future, I'll tell you how I know, I read it in the paper, Fifteen years ago" - John Prine

That's not really shocking.

On the other hand, I think they have gotten too big for their brtiches and it's time to crush them into submission. I'm tired of constant whining and protesting. Just because you have free speech it doesn't mean I want to hear you."We are living in the future, I'll tell you how I know, I read it in the paper, Fifteen years ago" - John Prine

interestingly (or perhaps, not very ) i was fairly left wing when i was younger, but have gotten a lot more conservative recently.
i think it's partly because i come from a working class family, since labour have come to power we have seen higher taxes, with nothing to show for it. the classes in my younger sisters' schools are the same size as mine were, you still wait a bloody age in A&E and yet we pay a lot more for the privilage. i suppose it's also partly because i live in the countryside now, and it's quite shocking to see how much the left hates us, the fox hunting issue and ever increasing petrol prices being prime examples. uni has also been a big factor, as iain will tell you, student organisations are almost without exception hard left, there is something that leaves a sour taste in the mouth about an organisation which is supposed to represent the student body going around swansea shouting about defending traitor MP george galloway or 'war crimes' in iraq (and, of course, not saying anything critical about the brutal regime that we removed...)."The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

Well, I wish I had time to respond to every post individually, but I'm in quite a rush today. I'd like to thank everyone for their input, both pro and con.
