Oooh an opportunity to show a couple more pictures of mine.

I must say Atlanta has the oddest downtown I've seen in my life. (but then again, I haven't been in the US a lot)

It is fairly odd . Me, I like the fact that the downtown is right in the middle, and then you go 5 miles away and suddenly you are in suburbia. It's the best of both worlds . And of course, go 20 miles, and you are in rural parts.

5 miles? It was like a mile and you were in the middle of the woods. (from the perspective of a Belgian, we wouldn't know what a forest is if you'd hammer it in our face)

            • If you go North or South from downtown you aren't in any danger of hitting a tree within a mile .

              • atlanta's downtown is pretty much most of the interesting part of the city proper. except for maybe buckhead and the highlands.

then you go for a short drive, less than five minutes, and you're in what is technically suburbia, but it's so urban it might as well be atlanta (decatur, for instance). most of these "suburban" cities are suburban simply because they want their independence and a lower tax burden.

then you hit true suburbia, maybe ten-twenty minutes later along the highways, in the counties of gwinett and cobb (at least the outer parts.)

a little bit farther than that, maybe about an hour's drive, you hit south jo-ja.

atlanta's really a tiny-ass city; less than 400k in the city proper. it's like most sunbelt cities--huge suburbs, small cities. everybody lives outside the city and a good chunk work inside.

a good portion of atlanta was built in/near a forest. most of those trees are gone now, bulldozed so newcomer carpetbaggers can have their matchbox $300k houses.

a helluva lot of skyscrapers will be going up in asia soon. a few in korea, several in china, a few in japan and taiwan; several in se asia, too. land is a precious commodity in quite a few of those nations, and they're not as worried as the americans are of certain events.

No, just one parking lot after another.

If you look closely, you can see a pedestrian "bridge" going across the lower part of the hole. Imagine the view!!!

I think the number for China is much higher than "several".

From my balconey, I can count about fifteen highrises under construction, two or three of which would probably be considered "skyscrapers". That's just within my view in just Shangai.

                        edit: confused "skyscraper" with "highrise"

Typical scenes from anywhere around Shanghai:

Above-ground parking is the spawn of the devil!
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. Yes. Quite. That's one of my biggest gripes about Atlanta. You have skyscrapers, but then multi-story above-ground lots right next to them.
