Microsoft down and out in Munich

Munich will dump 14,000 PCs running Windows and install Linux instead in what is one of the biggest moves away from Redmond to date. The importance of the deal prompted Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to make a last minute pitch and reportedly to undercut an offer from IBM and SuSE.

    Ballmer's efforts failed.
As I predicted last year, the OpenSource movement would slowly gather momentum. This bodes well since Munich is the biggest Western city to make such a move. Beijing, Korea, and some South American counties did it last year, and so did some smaller Western towns and cities.

This could well be the break needed to propel OSS into mainstream.

Where's the article about ChevronTexaco ditching Texaco's 26,000 *nix machines and putting Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP SP1 on them (while upgrading Chevron's 45,000 Windows machines to the latest versions as well)?

BTW, when I read this article today I totally predicted this thread.

And it's 14,000 PCs, government PCs. You're totally out to lunch again about Linux becoming mainstream because of 14,000 government PCs in Germany. But it's great sketch material...

Linux is crap. I have to use it when I'm in the syslab (computer systems lab, the fancy one) at school, and the UI is much more difficult to use. Plus, they don't have freaking WORD installed (so I can't do my homework before class!!!!:grrr: )

Wait, the city as a whole is dumping windows? As in all the citizens are lining up with their PCs?

I love Windows 2000. I'm fearing the day I have to switch to something else.

Maybe the X-box project becomes more sensible - anyone who knows about networks runs a mile away from Windows.

Not that I count myself in that number - it's just an opinion formed from observation.

What UR doesn't mention Windows 2000 gained significant marketshare, and so have things like MS' IIS and SQL Server. Windows Server 2003 will surely boost it farther, since a Windows machine now holds the performance crown rather than *nix.

Think about it - the rules for programming are still being written. There is no "ultimate" OS yet. Be flexible, JW. I've changed OS and hardware about 6 times now. The first time is always the hardest.

I've changed from literally dozens of OSes.

I've had BSD, Linux (about a half-dozen distros), Solaris (school), AIX (school), DOS, Win3.1, Win9x, WinNT...

Windows XP SP1 is the "ultimate" OS right now when it comes to desktop.

Windows Server is close to being the "ultimate" server, once it's even more scalable and has the rewritten CLI. Right now, BSD is the "ultimate" server.

Linux is the jack of all trades, master of none. That's its failing. It does everything, but that includes all the **** you don't want it to, in ways you'd never think (ever look at the filestructure in 99% of linux installs? Does it make sense to most people? etc)

Windows Server 2003 is, at least theoretically, very very secure right now. It ships in "lockdown" mode, IIS doesn't even get installed by default, far less things run under SYSTEM privledge now, the .NET Framework provides a very secure "sandbox" for all .NET code to work in (you should really look into this, interesting stuff), and it's been in testing for well over a year. All of it has been compiled with MS' new /GS compiler flag, which detects the majority of buffer vulnerabilities (which most security holes come from).

Asher, you misunderstood me. Aren't all MS servers vulnerable to MS overwatch?

It makes it unacceptable to foreign govts and multinationals who have dirty laundry to hide.

Not first time. I've been on apple, then DOS, then windows 3.1, then windows 95, then windows 2000. I just haven't been convinced that XP is any better, so I'm reluctant to switch.

Asher, since your the MS spokesperson 'round these parts, why don't you try to convince me?

MS makes the sourcecode available to government organizations who request it so they can modify it for their own needs, and to ensure there's no "overwatch" or spyware features built in.

Windows 2000 is fine, there's no reason you should upgrade to XP really. I find it nice to have the latest, though, but 2000 is just fine.

The only feature I've noticed (although I don't use it much) is the "two users can log on at once" one, which is of no benefit to me.
