I swear I didn't make that up, it's a Con law term. It just fit too well to not use it.

As far as I know the custom first became an important symbol for islam first in Egypt and the in other countries about 100 years ago. This as a (more or less) silent potest at the sometimes brutal 'modernization' at the time. It was on the way out before but around 1900 a book was published that used the veil as a symbol of muslim backwardness compared to Europe. In this way the veil became a symbol for true islam.

As for the veil in a longer historical perspective, It didn't become a custom in the muslim world until about three generations after Muhammed and the custom actually came (with the custom of harems) from christians and zoroastrians. For a long time it was in a way a status symbol for women belonging to the upper classes in the muslim world.

Obviously nine out of ten muslims doesn't have a clue about this today but that's how it usually is when it comes to religious people. Historical knowledge is very selective when it comes to ideas and customs.

Well what surprises me is taht she's a converted muslim. Now I could not´understand the reason why a woman would willingly convert? But it makes it even more difficult for me to understand why she's being so persistently dumb!

Sadly, we have the same problem here. Muslim women don't wear "masks", but they sometimes have no pics in their IDs, because they're afraid that photographs are evil or something like that.

When Islam first surfaced it was very popular amongst womwn as it gave them far more freedoms than they were used to. I don't think Islam itself oppresses womwn it is the interpreation of it that causes problems.

I agree. But even if they didn't. This is America, not the Islamic Republic of America. Make her take that sh1t off for the picture, or take away her license!

Does she have an argument based on the fact that Florida allowed her to wear her veil thingy in 2001?

Would that by itself set a precedent?

I can't believe they allowed her to do that in the first place, but then I suppose it is Flordia...

Considering that she's a convert, earlier with the name Sandra Keller, I think that seems a bit a strange of an argument as she's probably born in the US.

No, not a precedent, because the state will argue that the DMV employee didn't know the rule and made an honest error. Since there's no permanent harm as a result of that error, she can't hold the state to it.

The state let her know within a year, so at some point, somebody was going through the database and said WTF is this? If she'd had the license for several years and renewed it a time or two, she'd have a much better argument.
