This is not a good example. There was no resistance in Baghdad. So the US Army could have used bicycles with the same success.

I think what actually happened in Baghdad shows just how effective heavy armor can be in urban combat. Our tanks were practically invincible against anything the Iraqi's threw at them. I doubt we could have been as effective with dismounted infrantry or with LAV's.

Any weapons system is invincible if the "enemy" is simply not inclined to fight at all, let alone attempt to fight effectively. There wasn't a single documented attempt of an enemy RPG team trying a shoot-down attack. The closest I've read of so far was a couple of third-floor and fourth floor attacks from long (for an RPG) range, so those didn't have the flight angle to engage roof armor.

Based solely on our experience in Iraqi, I think we should place maximum effort on the defensive aspects of tanks so that tanks can effectively invade cities. Until such tanks actually reaches a city in any future war, the airforce and choppers can handled the over-the-horizon kills of enemy tanks. Turning a tank into a light armored vehicle that relies on over-the-horizon kills seems to me to be going in the wrong direction. Certainly such vehicles would be hard-pressed if enemy armor closed in for a melee.

If we need to get troops there faster by plane, I suggest we increase our heavy lift capacity instead.

Can't be done. The only uparmoring you could do would be to the roof and rear, which still couldn't be made RPG proof without a complete rework of the tank, and without exceeding maximum operational weight. It doesn't do you any good if you get such high ground pressure that you kill roads, bog cross country, or collapse bridges. Hitler tried that. (Maus, Brummbar, etc.)

I'd like to see force-wide adoption of the Sig FASS-90/StG-90 for regular rifles, and one or two of the IMI Tavor models to replace the M4A1.
