Bullsh-t. In the past 10 years we've only fought yokels with 30 yr old tank's with shoddily made homemade ammo.

What happens when we run up to a country with, say, 700 T-80 Black Eagles?
Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

You'll just be able to hit your allies tanks earlier and with more accuracy.

I'm pretty sure the article was clear on this - only 6 battalions (say 4,200 troops) would be equipped. That leaves the rest of the conventionals as they are.

Us Brits organised the 16 Air Assault Brigade along similar lines, some years ago - without the drones or the fancy c cube gear.

So it's fairly obvious this is an air depoly brigade rather than what the whole US army is going over to.

At $15 billion though, it is STUPENDOUSLY overpriced. I suspect Rumsfeld is just paying off the usual suspects.

Yeah, I'm sure everyday American Calvery guys wake up and say "Hey, let's open fire on our allies!"

The big fear for Brit troops is the Amercan Cavalry waking up in the morning and shouting

              "Open Fire!"

Even when the target is a flock of seagulls.

Actually, the incident in Kuwait where that trigger happy USAF colonel took an A10 up without permission was an aberation - but it has happened.

The wheeled vehicle advocates are using this as a foot in the door - looking for a test victim, say... Burkina Faso would do nicely, to show that it really, really works, and is the way of the future, blah blah blah. The goal of those guys is to make it standard force-wide.

Burkino Faso? Why not Lichtenstein or Luxoumburg if you want a pushover?

At $15 billion per 6 battallions, the switch over would be UNFUNDABLE. Hard concept for the US but true nontheless.

There's a lot of development money and crap in that initial contract that wouldn't be duplicated when you issued on a larger scale. Plus just plain pork.

I read somewhere that the Pentagon had not asked for money to upgrade the Abrahms and Bradley, but the Congress decided to spend $700 million on upgrades anyways.

I thought that was crazy. Now I read this.

$15 billion to re-invent the wheel.

Meanwhile, the US education system is falling apart, public libraries are being closed, highways are falling apart along with bridges, millions of people are functional illiterates, millions of people don't have proper medical care, and millions live in poverty.

Or just think about the tax cuts that could be done with $15 billion.

Nice to see that American politicians have their priorities right.
