Listen now folks, if you're going to sentence him to a prison, you might as well execute him -- his life is ruined after the sentence and he won't enjoy his life anyway -- suffering from eternal guilt and bitterness.
Will commit suicide or start using drugs during the first 6 months, I'd say. Sending him into prison would be pure hypocricy, considering the living conditions in US prisons.
I agree... Ruin a boy's life... Over a ****ing cat!!!????
he's not "sick" as some here have suggested. he's just a curious boy, possibly with a bad upbringing. who here can honsetly say they've never ripped the wings off a fly, peed on an anthill or similar?
I would agree with this statement, but the article said he beat up the cat before feeding it. I probably would have chucked mice, rabbits and stuff to gator myself if I was little kid in florida to see the gator "hunt" something. But beating up a cat was kinda unnecessary.
He also tried to lie so I dont buy into the whole "he felt guilty and tried to undo it as soon as he threw in the cat".
He needs severe punishment, but preferrably in a way that doesnt ruin his life. over a ****ing cat people!:-p

Yes, some people do need a sense of proportion here. This isn't murder because it is a cat. He should get some community service and counseling. No more.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
- John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

I say we feed congresspeople to gators instead. Much more expendable, and not anywhere near as cute."You're the biggest user of hindsight that I've ever known. Your favorite team, in any sport, is the one that just won. If you were a woman, you'd likely be a slut." - Slowwhand, to Imran

Damn! Can't find that bloody quote by Octave Mirebau (Or was it someone else?). Some of you people would really benefit from it... Even better, read a story or a novel by him. Frankly, I'm still looking for a full translation to read... What it says, far more eloquently than I am able, is that as long as people are cruel, murderous and unfeeling to animals they will be the same to other humans. Just as ertain human beings were seen inferior and therefore "fair game" (a good chunk of my relatives some two and three generations back were exterminated that way), people now say "it's just a cat".
If any distinction should be made, it is that the kid has the power of reason that should enable him to see what is right and what is wrong. Cats and other animals do not have this power, yet somehow they are far, far less prone to cause suffering and death just for the bloody sake of it.He's got the Midas touch.

I'll be the first to admit...
I'm sort of curious as to what a gator eating a cat looks like, too."You're the biggest user of hindsight that I've ever known. Your favorite team, in any sport, is the one that just won. If you were a woman, you'd likely be a slut." - Slowwhand, to Imran

I agree with those who think he should get some community service / fine / counseling. I was as violent as many when I was this kids age, with access to weapons and explosives and all sorts of animals. I hunted and fished and killed vermin and varmints, but I never for a second ever thought of killing someone's pet. That is really profoundly mean-spirited.He's got the Midas touch.

But 5 years is longer than some pedophiles get.
I will join the greek chorus. It's a ****ing cat!"You're the biggest user of hindsight that I've ever known. Your favorite team, in any sport, is the one that just won. If you were a woman, you'd likely be a slut." - Slowwhand, to Imran
