IRVING, Texas -- Vijay Singh has pulled out of the Colonial, the tournament he said Annika Sorenstam had no right to play.

"It's a good time to take off," Singh said Sunday, after winning the Byron Nelson Championship by two strokes.

He claimed the decision was not based on the blitz of publicity he generated Monday with comments critical of Sorenstam's participation in the event, which starts Thursday at nearby Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth.

"I have to be at (Mark) McCormack's memorial (service) on Wednesday," Singh said, referring to the International Management Group founder who died Friday. "I also have something on Thursday."

However, it must be noted that Singh had committed to the Colonial weeks ago, so it's not unfair to speculate that his late withdrawal has at least something to do with his desire to avoid a media circus.

On Monday, Singh said a woman didn't belong in a men's event, that he would pull out if he was paired with Sorenstam and he hoped she missed the cut. As it turned out, he pulled out even without being paired with her.

He subsequently backtracked, sort of, saying he apologized if he offended Sorenstam, as if there was any other way for her to take such comments.

Nick Price, Sunday's runner-up and the defending Colonial champion, also has been critical of Sorenstam's participation, although a little more diplomatically than Singh.

"Vijay is a straight-up person," Price said. "You always know where you stand with him."

    Price continued to defend Singh.

"I don't think he meant to say that he wants Annika to miss the cut, but I think he is frustrated with all the questions that have been going on," he said. "He sure got criticized this week.

"It shows how strong the guy is that he can come back and play the way he did and win. I certainly have a lot of admiration for him."

Price is among the most popular players around, but he also is sick of being asked about Sorenstam.

"I have answered more questions about Annika than how I am playing," said Price, a former world No. 1 from Zimbabwe who was voted into the Hall of Fame this year. "She had 41 other tournaments she could have chosen.

"I wish her the best of luck. She has a big heart. I don't think I would be able to do what she is going to do next week."

By that, he meant cope with the huge media spotlight and focus on her golf.

That's exactly what Singh did this week. He did it well, but he won't have to do it next week.

Mrs Singh probably wants to play mixed foursomes at their home club while he is in good form, and win a bit of crystal for the mantelpiece.

      • I just love when people dig themselves into REALLY deep holes... yet they still manage to find a way to dig the hole even deeper. Granted, there is no good way for Vijay to get out of the hole... but he sure as heck isn't picking the best of his options.

        • Vijay expresses things quite stupidly, doesn't he??

Personally I have no problem with a female golfer playing in a PGA event-- I don't think she has a prayer of winning but but will likely beat a number of male golfers ( some of whom are wildly inconsistent). It will be interesting to see if she makes the cut.

I also have no problem with her getting a sponsor's exemption on this event but would hope that things do not evolve so that she gets an exemption to event after event ( and becomes a "regular" through this method). If she wants to be a regular, she should go to Q school and earn her way in.

AS for tennis, I have little doubt that there are any number of old out-of -shape tennis stars that either of the Williams sisters could trash on the court ( just as Billie Jean King won the battle of the sexes). But I wonder could either of them crack the mens top 100 rankings if they tried to play the elite men. I don't recall the actual numbers but I believe Serena can serve around 120 mph which is a speed male players have to deal with routinely and would not find overpowering.

          • I think Vijay is being a little hypocritical, does he complain alot when the Masters' people give Nicklaus and Palmer sponsor exemptions? Sure, Jack and Arnie have earned their reputations and with that comes special treatment, but to complain that Annika is taking the spot of a more qualified male golfer ignores that's what exemptions are usually for - to invite someone less qualified but who brings something else, like publicity. Being the best female golfer certainly should carry some consideration... These guys should just kick her butt in the tournament and let their actions speak instead of their mouths.

Then your an american, are all your ancestors irish every one of them, or are you just chosing the 1 you like best.

If VJ is born in Fiji and considers himself Fijian then he's Fijian
I'm mostly Irish with some German with a little Portuguese thrown in, I'm American because I was born here. Vijay's ancestry is Indian, not Fijian. You're mixing lineage with a geographical location. Jews don't cease being Jews just because they are born in the USA.

By that rationale I'm MORE Irish 'cause my ancestors came from there 70 years ago.
Depends on what you consider more of a heritage, where you lived for a few decades or where your ancestors lived for millennia.

              • That's a very strange way of thinking about things. Surely a person's cultural identity is entirely his own? I've got friends who one generation back are Tanzanian and two generations back Gujarati. Does this mean that they cannot derive a cultural identity from Britain? What does ancestry have to do with ethnonational identity at all? If they feel british, are born here and attached to the country, share its cultural values and most importantly, define themselves as British, who are you to say they're not?

Most of the big names in golf never went to Q school. Tiger got invites when he turned pro, and won enough money to earn his card (and then some!!). Same applies for Mickelson and many others.

Annika would have to do pretty well to play her way in that way, I think a player is limited to the number of invites he/she can receive in one season to about 7.

                  • There was an interview with one of the players this morning who was asked if there's any extra worries about being beat by a women. He said, 'hey, if I play bad, there's probably 50 women that could beat me."

I mainly got my cultural identity from where I grew up not from my ancestors' history.

                      • there will always be male golfers with a total off day and end up at +11 or something.. so I reckon it's not that hard to beat at least a few male golfers, provided she doesn't have a total off day as well cos then she'll end up +20 or sumtin

                        • It was hilarious on SportsCenter this morning.
While trying to predict how she will do, they said, let's see how some of her statistics stack up to the men.
                          And they used,
Greens in reg. (higher percentage than any man)
Scoring average (would rank in the top 5)
Top 10 finished (would rank in the top 5)
                          Driving distance (would rank 163)

The only one that tells you anything is the driving distance. All the others are based on playing other women on courses set up for women. Man, they are really stretching here. Let the circus begin.

My favourite quote on the relevance of stats in golf: Lee Janzen was being interviewed a couple of years ago.

Interviewer: Lee, you're not having as successful a year as last year (he had won an event or two)
Lee: That's right, but when I look at my stats, I'm driving better, hitting more greens in reg, and putting better. I must be adding my card up wrong.
