Yeah, Brazil, Panama. Good for them.
Gepap is moving there next week.

          I'm patriotic, but not stupid.

So I'll have to assume this thread is not about me

Actually, you're not that far off the mark. It is a sort of neocon national viagra.

Considering (a) the recruiting quotas allowed by Congress only allow for about 6 percent of the US citizens turning 18 each year (and enlistments are available to 17 to 34 year olds, so the real pool is much bigger); and (b) not everyone who goes in or comes out of the US military has starry-eyed, USA is the greatest views with respect to our conduct of foreign policy, then who cares if he's in or not?

A lot of comfortably gung-ho Americans, including an awful lot of current political leaders, are comfortably gung-ho about someone else bleeding and dying. Only two Presidents since Eisenhower have had actual combat service.

Well, yes, this is a fair comment. Although the logical conclusion is that anyone over a certain age, who has not served, is unqualified to express an opinion on these points. Is that really what you mean?

In any case, we do have an all volunteer military, you know. This point probably carries more wieght in Germany, for example. (Not that they intend to actually use thier military for anything)

people at Apoltyon always make me feel bad for being patriotic.

I can't help it!! It is the way I am.

If I could change, I would.

I wish I was more hateful towards my country, but I am not.

I mean that it's inconsistent for one ideological side to point out lack of service or unwillingness to serve by people on the other side as a qualifier of their opinions, without applying the same standard.

Certainly. Although I think the sort of chest-thumping gung ho crap you see from some people who've never served, or at least never had their ass in the grass under fire is a little more inconsistent than the hand-wringing whiny liberal types. The whiny liberals at least realize they're chickenchokers, and come up with a rationale of sorts for it. The chest-thumpers (if they're hitting that high) don't seem to see it.

So do you think only the real men that saw combat can decide national policy? Because that's what you're saying. The hawks that never saw combat don't have the right to do it, and the doves that never saw combat neither have the right to do it, nor want to do it. Only the real hardcore supertroopers have the right to determine policy.

In the movie "PT 109", Kennedy and his shipmates are portrayed as "on the ball" crewmen, the skinny about why they got rammed by a Japanese ship at night was that Kennedy and the crew were drunk and didn't have a clue about what hit them.
