kinda like what happens here-- you get restricted, then you come back and everything's back to normal...

    so to speak.

you´re just a supporter of theory #3 and there´s nothing wrong with it. nearly everyone wants criminals being punished just for emotional reasons - me included.

but once again this is not the only reason why people become punished and we can look back to milleniums of experience in this issue. the main intention should be keeping a crime rate as low as possible and it turned out that draconian punishments generally aren´t able to serve this aim. just take a look at the crime rates in the US and compare them to those in Middle Europe.

plus, people don´t only get imprisoned for major crimes like murder, rapture or robbery. do you think that someone should also lose his right to vote for a minor crime like stealing or smoking marijuana?

That's a deranged analogy, oedo; and what's worse, you know it.
With all due respect, of course.

its not just emotional, its moral. its part of ur responsibility to society etc...

u think draconian doesn't work? try singapore.

I am not entirely certain on my view cuz honestly its never been an issue for me. I don't see any convict rallies to try and votregain their ing rights, and I guess only a minority of states even take them away.

draconian punishment systems may have some effect in singapore-- but i honestly think most of the reason why there's much less crime is because of the cultural mores.

that's why skorea, japan, and taiwan also have lower crime rates compared to their western counterparts.

I think there is some cultural mores that enforce the idea that it is wrong to commit crime(omg I wish we had that).

but also realize their culture imposes its own draconian measures on those who are criminals. they aren't all about their father mistreating them or their gf dumping them.

Don't throw pot possession in with murder.

If it's interesting, it's interesting when comparing apples to apples.

I wouldnt be surprised if crime in some Islamic countries is low because of draconian punishments... hard to be a repeat thief if your hands are cut off

Crime is very high in many Islamic countries. On the other hand, supposedly lax countries like Britain and Canada have much lower crime rates.

Personally, I think it has to do with our culture which raises individualism to a holy religion and degrades the idea of social responsibility and at the same time has many forces which break down the bonds between people If you are the most important thing there is, don't care about others, and don't have any connection to others, why shouldn't you be a criminal. Until we start caring more about others and being less self-absorbed, we're gonna keep having these problems.

I don't see how an x-con's ability to vote supercedes any of yours or anyone else's rights.
