Colombia was actually called the United States of Colombia in the middle of the 19th century.

I think they should be called United States of Vespucci. Only a moron would name a nation after someones first name... the exception being Mingapolco of course !

Panama is supposed to mean "abundance of fish". Panama is still home to some of the best deep sea sport fishing in the whole world.

And on the other side, the name Hellas (Greece) means "Land of Light" according ot one etymology.

Then there's also another myth associated with the name Hellas but I'll let you find it out yourselves

Must have been damned ugly to get everyone to run away like that.

I don't know it. Apart from Hellene was supposed to be the ancestor of the Greek race.

I only mentioned the Helen myth by word association.

Helen my ass of course. It was just a question of not letting a profitable colony gain independance.

But it made a nice tale.

                                Belgium ...
Land of the Belgae, a collection of Gallic tribes ...

The name is totally artificial though. It didn't exist until 1830.
