You know the main problem with this is before you know it, you'll all owe $100s .

Well the itunes music store sold over a million songs in its first week of operation.

I must say I am surprised.

Might sink Bill's ambitions to get all the music companies to use WMA9. Apparently they aren't too keen on handing over their keys to him.

Companies have been selling protected WMA files for over a year already...

                        I bought two so far.

Plus, lots of hardware companies have signed on for Windows Media DVD players. And Creative supports WMA instead of AAC for their mobile audio products...

I think it would be really dumb for music companies to tie their product into anything other than an open standard.

                          But it's their funeral.

WMA is cheaper than Dolby's AAC encoding licensing fees (how is this open, btw) and Faunhaufer's MP3 licensing fees.

I'm still really confused about how you equate AAC to being an open standard, when last I checked it was a proprietary Dolby standard.

Well it's open in the sense that no monpolistic OS manufacturer owns it, which is really all that matters.

As a company I'd be more concerned with the cost, quality, and feature set than who owns it.

It's not like Dolby has a monopoly on DVD audio, right? It's not like Dolby is desperately trying to get the DVD-Audio stamp, right?
