I'm the fourth generation of my family to have the exact same name and i am an only son. Talk about pressure...

Still I have thus far avoided procreating and this is despite two near misses.

Michael Jackson is human? Since when?
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

Just for clarification: You are asking whether a consenting adult would use such a medication on himself, right? Not whether prospecitve parents should be able to use it on a fetus.

Two vastly different questions, I think.

            CyberGnu :
I think it is about parents doing it on their children's fetuses.

ow that's pressure ! Make sure to have throngs of sons

I think its about changing the genetic code inside the person before they develop, so theoretically its even before its a fetus. tho I dont know any details about when u'd have to do what genetically.

Hmm, but almost the entire thread has treated it as if the first was the case... Talking about a medicine, for example.

If it is the second, I want to change my poll, though...

                    CyberGnu,

It's about altering the genetic code early, so yes, it'd be about parents making decisions for their children.

Altering the genes passsed on to children would be a great benifet to humanity. Imagine cancer, Al Himerze (spell?), man baldness, poor vision, and a million other things being wiped out in one generation.

It would be the greatest evolutionary step forward in the history of our species and one we made for our selves.

and on the other side we might dwindle the genetic codes variety down so thin that any new diseases could create staggering difficulties for us to overcome.

a variety of socially preferable tampering would probably be dangerous, but yah something like that.

Out of curiosity, I wonder if people who think that this manner of genetic engineering should not be allowed feel the same way about allowing eugenics to change hair or eye color, etc.

I would change everyone to bi. No reason for people not to be attracted to one another.
