SMAC made many advances to the civ series. Although it may have been lacking in areas such as graphics (which are only icing on the cake anyway), the gamepaly was outstanding. Social engineering, revised trade, AI improvements, better diplomacy, design workshop, a much better terrain modeling system... just to mention a few.

Heh, yeah. Sid Meier's AC would probably sell oh about twice as much as BR's AC. It is a marketing decision, and Brian doesn't mid as long as he gets to make high quality games and the insiders know who he is.
