Some think so. That's why there is the option. But, in my opinion, ruins add too much of a luck factor into the game. One can win a challenge match simply by being lucky with ruins in the beginning. Not much of a challenge match.
well, what fascinates me about strategy games like CTP is to have a strategy, then have chance interfere with the game and then adjust your strategy.
the interaction between human intelligence and random events is what i like most.

Good point. But there are PLENTY of other luck factors in CTP, besides ruins, to create this environment you speak of. Ruins just seem to skew the results way too much -- at least in one vs. one games.
Mathemagician: go to the CtP page here in Apolyton and follow the links to files/downloads. All of the upgrades and patches are there, with instructions and recommendations. For multiplayer you will need an up to date servers.dat file, which I'll post here when I get home if I remember, or maybe someone else will in the meantime. Replace the existing servers.dat with the new one in the current location.
sorry. maybe i should have mentioned that i already installed servers.dat and downloaded the german 1.2 patch but it refused to do anything, as it said 'you dont have to run this file. its not meant for your version.' or something like that.
well, the same configurations do work at some computers (including my own). only at the computer(s) of a friend of mine it doesnt.

Perhaps RC's English servers.dat isn't compatible with Math's German CtP. Mathemagician, contact Hatschy. I know he has a German version of CtP, so he could help you.
