Well the Oxford Popular English Dictionary says:

jettison v.t. 1 to throw (goods) overboard; to release or drop from an aircraft or spacecraft in flight. 2 to discard as unwanted.

Which is interestingly subtly different - no mention of distress and also a second meaning which I wouldn't have thought of...

Well, I guess it all depends upon whether you're a populist or an Australian... A question made all the more difficult when you take in to account that the incumbent Australian Prime Minister is a populist

Surely we all acknowledge that the Queen's English is spoken in it's most legitmitate form in south east Australia (one of the most distant locales from Oxford)?
