It means, for example, that this is the 2003rd year in the calendar commonly accepted around the world. I think Firaxis should have made Civ start at year 0 and work up to 6050. There's no event in the 400th year of history that merits starting a calendar.

Except for the fact that, as you say, that it is the year commonly accepted as 0 around the world. You've got to count around some point, and as long as there is widespread agreement, I say stick with what's working
If I determine the enemy's disposition of forces while I have no percerptible form, I can concentrate my forces while the enemy is fragmented. The pinnacle of military deployment approaches the formless: if it is formless, then even the deepest spy cannot discern it nor the wise make plans against it.

That's why BCE is used as the academic nomenclature- it still uses the traditional year 0 as a base, but just removes the religious connotation.
It would be nice if Firaxis gave an option regarding calendar types (i.e. Christian, Academic, Buddhist, etc.)

Why would we remove the religious connotation, when we count from year "0" exactly because its religious connotation? Without this religious connotation year 0 wouldn't be year 0; it is absurd to change the name only to avoid saying something ("Before Christ"), that is just perfectly true (well, unless they miscounted the year somehow) and universally accepted. You can count the years in "Before Confucius" or whatever else only nobody will know what the hell you are talking about Besides no one really cares what this BC means; it is a standard de facto. Why change it? This sounds like "esperanto" to me (making a language for the sake of making a language) : change a name for the sake of changing it. There's no logic in that.
PS I'm not religious.

A fair comment. There's not really any necessity, we just live in 'politically correct' times.

While we're making up calanders, wouldn't Columbus's voyage and the corresponding 'Age of Exploration' be a more likely choice as the start of the 'Common Era'?

That seems a little Americo-centric don't you think?
