Oh, are you referring to WWII that we were fighting from mid-1939 and the USA decided to enter when the hard work had already been done in 1944? Come to think of it, the same thing happened in WWI.
As for Japan, we actually had to show you where Asia was, or you would never have found it because until then (and arguably, still today) Americans thought the edge of their flat world was at Hawaii. If you hadn't provoked Japan by embargoing them, they may not have invaded and split the allied forces. And while you were parading your Carriers and Battleships around the Pacific, Australians were slogging through malaria infested jungles in South-Easat Asia protecting the not-so-free world from being even less free. Even then, Australia supplied both Europe and Asia with troops.
Then you go and drop 2 atom bombs killing hundreds of thousands of innocents, and for the next 60 years physcially threaten anyone else who wants to try to build their own bomb, apparently because it's safer for the world if nuclear weapons are only allowed to be controlled by the one single nation that has ever used them in anger.
Saved our arse? America was afraid of losing her own arse, and sat on the fence for so damned long that she nearly did, along with the rest of the western world!
But hey, that's just my opinion
