You poor b@st@rd. getting a real life is extremely over rated

Now you will probably get the worst form of OMT, frustrated OMT! Ive wanted to "take care" of my wife for several years now and just claim insanity over that one

    • I'm out spending money I don't have on the pre-order as we speak, err, type, or speak, or whatever it is that we do.

RL? That's that game we play on the side when we need to escape from the real world of CIV?

GB will be drinking somewhere tonight with or without the tavern here!

Golden Bear stood outside the entrance of the Tullamore Dew as the rain poured down. The once warm and friendly surroundings were suddenly dimmed as people came staggering out as if chased by some monstrous beast. As the last drunken sod came flying out to land in the mud, an angry Ming could be seen in the door, wielding con's wife as a club.

"And stay out there and get wet until you get some manners you smelly louts. If you come back in I want polite CIV talk and nobody gets drunk and rowdy."

Curiously, con's wife doesn't seem upset by being swung about by her heels.

Golden Bear thinks for a moment and decides to go back inside. Con climbs out a muddy puddle and follows - using Golden Bear as a screen so that his wife doesn't see...

...and I assume that Civ stories are acceptable in the tavern?

        • I have said this before and I'm sure it won't be the last time. I am not buying Civ4 when it is released. For several reasons.

          1 - I really like Civ3.
2 - I just don't have the desire for more or different features. While playing Civ2 I always wanted more diplo options. Civ3 delivered that. I don't see what Civ4 has that I need.
3 - The new rules and features don't seem like must-haves.
4 - There are sure to be bugs, expansions, and price reductions. I can wait.

The very open modability (XML, Python, C++ I can do that.) is a big draw to buy Civ4, but not enough of one.

Now since the bar is closed I'm going to sneak in back and seem where they hid the rum. Anybody need something?

                Diety save us all...

skrobie, I LOOOVE CivIII and have been skeptical about IV - particularly after the screenies I saw last June or so.

But I went out and read all that stuff from the link above and I have decided that life will not be worth living if I don't have IV ASAP. More diplomacy. No REXing. State religions. Upgradable units - remember the things we loved from MOM? Oh baby, oh baby... pant.

You're old enough to remember MOM aren't you? I reloaded it about a year ago and played it for a week or two - the problem is that my skills are so much better now that it was impossible to lose. Good game, although dated.

Now XCOM, there is a game that is never dated. Just slap hi-res graphics on it and I'll play it without changing anything else. Hmm. I wonder if I have a windows-playable version anymore.

BTW con - thanks for spending my $50. My wife is making ME clean the catboxes until January because of you.

Golden Bear sits at a table with a sigh. He notices that the floor isn't sticky anymore and the vomit is gone from the tables. Meekly he asks for a pale ale.

Con slithers up beside him and asks how he liked spending $50 he didn't have.

GB stands up, "Mrs. con! Over here, over here. You missed a spot!" He points at Con.

The woman, now that she has her feet back for their normal purpose, hefts the mop she has in her hand and heads towards the table with a look on her face that betokens thunderstorms.

Con shrivels down into his chair. "You're gonna SO pay for that Bearboy. But, please, SAVE ME!"

My wife doesn't know about the money yet. But since the life sucking ***** spends all my money usually I figured I'd beat her to the punch this time

                  • I like the look of cIV minus the giant soldiers when you zoom in. The units look ridiculous to me towering over a city. In my mind it heads towards cartoonish. However, I'm not sure I have a different idea as I DO want the full zoom feature. That is sorely lacking in CivIII

So, we are aware of a lot of features in the new release...it will be difficult to not buy it right away.

I'll still play Civ3 a little -- probably less as I get into cIV. It's the natural way of things. I will finish my Civ3 PBEMS -- so I'll be busy with that for awhile.
                    Haven't been here for ages....

Kinda cool letting lose all my new strategies on a game I disbanded in ...96? The AI never knew what hit it

                        • Hehe, have a beer then

I have preordered civ4 and I am a bit curious to which civ1/civ2/civ3 strategies will still work

One that has never failed me is this one, build a *strong* defensive line and let the AI bleed himself white while you build up for the breakthrough

I LOVE the way your mind works (takes a chug of beer), I think a lot is going to have to be rethought , no more ICS, No more SoD's, no more corruption.

I think we are going to have to do a larger shift in thinking from 3 to 4 then we did from 2 to 3.

                            • Yeah, I think that it is going to be a big shift, too. But the 2-3 jump was huge. Remember the whine-fest that came out when people realized that they couldn't do a chain attack across a continent? The absolute outrage about corruption? And, snicker, the anti CIVIII rants that came out the first time somebody saw a culture flip?

Those oversize units really do cheeze up the graphics, Shogun. Maybe they'll come out with a mod to make them leprechaun sized for those of us that can still see our monitors.

Yeah, catboxes. Till January. con, I'm gonna email your wife... naw, I wouldn't do that to a buddy.

What I like about the turtle-up (strong defensive line is just a variant IMNSHO) is the way that you can get all kinds of AI infantry units wandering around inside your culture sphere as you leapfrog them to take their cities behind them. It's like Napolean breaking down the Austrians in his first campaign across North Italy. They're spreading out to cover everywhere while he stays concentrated and punches through and outflanks. Me and Napolean. Yup.

That ought to be enough civ content for me to sneak in my drink order.

I need something more cultured than Makers Mark tonight. I'll start with the scotch and wash it down with a scotch chaser. I think, yes, I think Laphroig will do.

This reminds me of my time in Belize... Glenfidditch was cheap there since it had just become a self-governing colony. The local beers were Charger (lager), Belikin (lager) and Belikin Stout (darkish lager but about 6% alcohol). All were cheap - about $0.50US at the time. Long nights spend behind the distillery without electricity but with a kerosene refrigerator to chill the beer. Sigh.
