        Mail received. Twice.

        First thoughts.

Switched Carthage to a new Worker and cut science to 20% (enough to keep Writing 1 turn away). Not enough land to REX, so I'm going to start war preparations. Settler goes 1111 from Carthage.

        [edit]
Paddy, did you deliberately send it two turns earlier?
        [/edit]
        Seriously. Kung freaking fu.

I like the idea of playing the game as you see fit. Sort of what would happen historically with a succession of kings. It also makes it more interesting when the save rolls back around to you.

                Great start guys!

Ok, there was some land to REX into, because the French apparently met some trouble. But I got carried away and put a Settler near a barb camp, right on my last turn.

We have a tech lead, at least on our continent. We finished Philo first and got Literacy. With Carthage growing so fast, we can make a serious attempt at the Great Library, or SoZ (Math in 4 turns). [edit]No Ivory around, making SoZ impossile for now[/edit]. Some of our neighbours have Mysticism, none have Literacy or Philosophy. We don't have Mysticism, in hope of a more favourable trade later on.

Carthage is the most important city by far, and our choice. Three possibilities:
                      - keep REXing (west near France and one spot near Berlin to the north-west),
                      - start churning out units,
                      - start a wonder.

The last two would require some more adjustments to the lux slider. But I won't try to talk anybody into anything. It's all yours.

                      I need Beta's e-mail, please.

                      Oh, and the screenie:

                        1500BC sent to Beta.

I made the turns even, for easier tracking. Thanks for the additional playing time, Paddy.

The Reign of Beta I of Carthage

Trained from the early days in the Carthaginian military, most expected Prince Beta to become a warrior king. But to the people's surprise, he was a most peaceful King.

He immediately concluded a trade with the Russians for Mysticism; more to maintain good relations given that a Russian warrior was on the border near an undefended Hippo.

Carthaginians mourned the loss of their countrymen who had set out to settle a new city, and were mercilessly cut down by barbarians. But being a stouthearted people, the citizens of Carthage rallied, dealt with the barbarians, and a new expedition headed out to the SW to settle the frontier city of Leptis Minor. They narrowly reached the area before the heathen French and their squabbling children showed up looking to settle the area as well.

Carthaginian warriors kept up a fine dance for decades as the French settler wandered about. In the meantime, news of the succes of Leptis Minor inspired hundreds of adventurous Carthaginians to head out for a new city site - also to the SW, but on the coast, where the fish would be plentiful, and the climate moderate. There the fine town of Sabratha was settled.

While the settling was going on, Conan the Wandering Warrior in the far north met a new and industrious civilization, who called themselves the Chinese.

Around this same time, King Beta concluded another technology deal, obtaining horseback riding for mathematics, again with the Russians. He also decided that writing was worth putting up for sale, and basically obtained all of the remaining gold in the world.

Many may criticize King Beta for his choice of research after philosophy was completed. He went for map making. To be honest - many think that this was simply an oversight on his part. A non-decision made after a good meal and too much wine. Who will ever know? But the Carthaginians are a seafaring people, and navigation, the ways of the sea, and map making are intrinisc to who they are. So, wine or no wine, map making was the next tech researched.

Barracks were also constructed in Theveste and Carthage, and a few warriors produced. But generally, King Beta will be remembered as an expansionist and builder. The King who claimed the wild south west plains, AND the wild horses that inhabited them.

In the final days of his reign, Beta the Builder set his sights on the German frontier, and Carthaginians settled the border city of Rusicade, again narrowly beating the foreigners to the frontier. Upon his death in 1025Bc, another settler was enroute to the German border, where Krull, Defender of City Sites, was protecting the area. King Beta's vision was a city 7-7-7 of Badlands, NW of the forst game tile, or one tile to the NE of that against the river. He had recommended that walls and temples be priorities in these endangered cities.

In the meanttime, another settler was being produced,in Leptis Magn, after its completion of a granary. That settler could lay claim to land to the SW.

Also of note in his reign, a road was cut through to the herds of horses, and Carthaginians could now produce horsemen.

Map making was completed, and code of laws well underway. Only the Russians were in spitting distance tech wise.

All in all, it was a productive and peaceful reign. And when King Beta died of old age (and liver failure), he felt he had done Carthage proud.

One would think the people would be alarmed and worried with the passing of King Beta I, but that was not the case. The Carthaginian leadership was wise not only in the ways of civilization expansion, but in the ways of talent management and succession. A bright, albeit upstart, scientist by the name of Prince McMeadows had long been rumoured to be next in line, and it was less than a day after the funeral when the government announced the crowning of ...

                            King McMeadows I

May he live long and prosper, and do Carthage proud.
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war .... aw, forget that nonsense. Beer, please.
