So I still have my own pick, the Turks. I'm not sure if that's good or bad...
Enjoy Slurm - it's highly addictive!

                    • We already played one full turn in June for this game, and it's not yet July...

By the way, Sir Ralph, I saw you played a Tarzan-style SP game this weekend and made a comment in the Strat forum. So is the citizen maintenance really too harsh? I thought it was noticeable but manageable in my test games, especially since the tech rate is for a small map.

                      • A simple solution would be to have every tile produce one extra commerce.

                        • I know you suggested that before, but it would have several side-effects. It would give the Rep/Demo trade bonus to tiles where it should not normally be given, for example, and it would increase the bonus for cities with improvements like banks and libraries. We want a slow tech pace in this game, because of the large distances the units have to travel (We don't want them to become obsolete by the time they reach their targets!)

                            • I tried an SP game using your Tarzan mod....and by the mid to late ancient age, without marketplaces, it was becoming almost impossible to research. Every tile needs to be roaded (which isn't a problem as you have plenty of time!) and without lots of rivers you're toast! Of course, gold hills and other trade bonus resources really help....as do coastal locations and a beeline to Map Making!

I don't think the AI fared much better though, if that's any consolation

As an indication, I was playing the Ottomans on Emperor and by 310AD I was researching Code of Laws, still entrenched in Despotism. Income was just over 100 with 10 cities and your greedy taxmen were taking more than half, which left me researching at 10% with every city on wealth production, but still going backwards. I stopped

Oh, and the Privateer barbs are nice. Good luck exploring with your Curraghs!
