Similarities with Civ1:
- Palace instead of throne room
- Leaderhead instead of portrait
- No farmlands
- hmm... can't seem to think of any other similarites other than the basic game concept which is the same for Civ1/2/3/SMAC
BTW, do you know WHY they can't stray too far off?
Perhaps because technically it is SID MEIER'S Civilization?
