You can definitely get past pop 6.

Olaf, why would the barbs get your settler? The hut won;t be opened until Berlin reaches level 2.

Sure you can, since each grassland without any bonus would produce 4 foods with railroad and irrigation, it would require no more than 6 grassland tiles to support size 12.

Oops, should be: Whether they can grow to size 12 without an aqueduct, if moved to the hill.

It's fairly obvious it will eventually grow to size 12.

Marla's map starting positions are all awesome, IIRC. I played China for a bit (Industrial Age turns got to 45 mins on my paltry 400mhz machine), and I liked their setup.

Theseus, try the save I posted. I just finished playing it all the way out, and I'm curious how you would do. It makes for a fun romp. It ended up being one of the most powerful games I've ever played... final score 5900 and change, finished in the 13 century, having just discovered military tradition... I never even used a cavalry. I did, however, hook up the 8th luxury on the last turn Muwahaha!

I will (can't wait), but I'm totally obsessed with AU 106 right now. It's a little different due to the conditions, but it's got "one more turn" like there's no tomorrow, and then, I think, an absolutely epic mid- and end-game.

IMHO it's better to 'share' all those bonuses with a second city.
If not you waste them for awfully long time before being actually being able to fully use them. I might move one or two tiles.
Having a early city that grows fast and can build something, can be a mighty strong combination. Colossus, lighthouse,....and last but not least, early exploration

Yeah, you are probably right, it's too much for a city at 12 pop... I don't think I could resist though.

Ok, here is another good starting postition. No floodplains, but lots of Cattle, Wheat and Game, as well as some nearby luxuries. And lots of rivers. Starting position marked with red X:

I wrote wrong, I meant worker. Have to keep him inside town when the hut pops.

You were too fast to answer, as I edited the post directly after I saw the mistake.

Hurricane, that is a really nice place. The only deficiency really is the lack of horses, unless I missed them. Then again, you're Persia, and you have iron

Theseus, AU 106 does look interesting... if I have time this weekend I will give it a shot (definitely as Persia). You know what I think would have offered more strategic choice on civ choice? Instead of Persia/Rome, Persia/India. Ind/Sci vs. Rel/Com on a large map w/room to grow. Given those choices, I may have chosen India. No way I would choose Rome.

India is a pretty good civ choice now with the newly improved commercial trait. It's very powerful now, especially at larger maps. They are a very good choice for a builder type player, and they have a perfect timed UU. I just finished a game at a huge map with them. I had practically no corruption.

But a IMHO even better builder choice now is France.

I'm just starting a new game today (huge random map with 16 civs) and end up with this one. Thebes was found at 4000BC right on top of 'furs', so instantly 1 happy citizen right there. There are cows in the north west and floodplains in the south west. Many rivers in the surrounding areas. This map has some potential. I think I will play a couple dozen turns to see if there is any horse and iron near by.

The pink line in the upper right corner was where I actually started. mostly hill and grass up there. here's the save.
