uh yes I tried to start it from the cd...it goes 'loading' then gives a missing bwink32.dll ...a file that i wasn't able to find anywhere...
but this dll missing...made me think of a incompatibility with windows 98 (NOT SE)
Did you install the Bink viewer to watch the Security Briefing Easter Egg? I had this problem once and uninstalling the viewer helped with it. I may have also reinstalled CivIII but I don't remember.
I now have the Security Briefing renamed to replace the opening movie. The game starts up a little faster with the smaller file.
A better MUCH more stable OS is Windows XP. Don't even bother with 98 or 98SE. If you find a OEM version of it you can get it for $99.00. My company sells them like hot cakes here in Vegas. (I am not advertising either) Just some good advice for game players especially. Recoverable crashes everytime how is that for a plus?

You should consider updating to Win98SE. It solves a lot of issues in Win98.

I had problems with the 1.21 patch, similar to the problems I had when I installed 1.17. I got the spalsh crash, or no video, or if I removed the movies, I got buttons with no text in the opening screen.
After uninstalling, reinstalling, and repatching, it still didn't work.
Here was my workaround (just like my last splash crash workaround):
Installed patch.
Replaced exe with nocd exe (and yes, i have a retail disc)
REBOOTED
This last step is important. I get garbage without the reboot. Now everything works fine again, except for the Civ Placement Tool, which is incompatible with the new save game format. Doh! No more kittenworld mod for a few days... Sigh.

I am truly frightened... People, ignore this post... Windows XP is EVIL and should be avoided like the plague.
