  • Damn, I couldn't find this thread anywhere, but I have posted a thread on the issue of saltpeter. I knew the chemistry education would come in useful somewhere

It looks like Provost Harrison was right about the saltpeter as a strategic resource for gunpowder (which, like bronze, is manufactured, not natural). If you require more proof, see:
Yeah, saltpeter is mined and used to manufacture gunpowder. The other components of gunpowder, charcoal and sulphur are very common and thus would not need to be special resources in themselves...

    • In order to use iron, you need a minor wonder, which can be produced by a city having access to both iron and coal. You may be able to find it in the info center of civfanatics.com

      • Do those numbers under "strategic resources" have some sort of arcane meaning? Any guesses? Any solid answers?

        • Confirmation of aluminum, required for (at least) stealth bomber:

          • Cool, that Pepsi Can turned out to be aluminium. I'll update the list later tonight.

I believe it is the number of resources of that type that you have access to. But it might as well be something else.

                • So for a little bit of background knowledge, I would presume that aluminium resources would represent an abundance of bauxite (aluminium ore). I would expect it wouldn't become available until the discovery of electricity, because before the development of electrolysis which is used to extract aluminium, it was extremely rare and expensive, despite the extreme abundance of it's compounds in the Earth's crust (in fact one of the most abundant elements on Earth). Electrolysis meant the metal could be separated by applying a high voltage across molten aluminium, and the liquid aluminium produced at the electrode removed.

So for it's appearance, I would expect that electricity would be the prerequisite.

But damn, they have called it aluminum, damn American spellings. It is aluminium, ending in -ium like other bleeding metallic element of this form (chromium, magnesium, uranium, mendelevium)

                  • The layout of the list have been changed to make it easier to read. All colors are placed by a script, which means that I haven't put them out manually, and therefor may some errors exist in the HTML. Let me know if you have some problems.

                    These colors are used.
Headers: Background: quote color, Text: dark background color
Other, Background: changing between light and dark background. Each row starts with the opposite to the previous. Text: default

                    • The underlying terrain

                      Just a curiosity...
could we all try to see if a particular resource is linked with a fixed
kind of terrain, one or more than one, or random?
May be the "correlation policy" may vary between luxuries and strategical resources...
I think it could be precious to know:
ok, now I need oil, let me get hold of all the deserts in the world!
                      More on the same:
I got a desert tile with oil, I change it to plains (allow me), why should my oil wells get dry!?!
The ice was here, the ice was there, the ice was all around: it cracked and growled and roared and howled like noises in a swound!

I believe that someone have said that each resource can be set on what terrain type it will exist, but if it only is on what terrains it would be generated or on what it can exist I don't know.

I admit I have some problems in understanding your reply.
Do you mean there is a "resource map" independent of the "terrain map" and that resources appear only if the tile is adequate? So that if I terraform a tile of sea into land, I might end up with wheat?
Or that I can have a resource on any kind of terrain? (whales on the mountains)
                          I am quite confused.

do you have any other screens like the rubber screen? could possibly all strategic resources grant a +2 trade bonus?

                            • Well, as I have some problem understanding myself too, will I take it one time more.

I don't know how the resources are stored, what I know is that someone (Dan?) said earlier that every resource could be modified to appear on every type of terrain. That is not default I guess, and the later part of my reply was about what would happen when a terrain was changed. I don't know that, but as there is support for having any resource on any terrain type it would be possible to keep the same resource when a terrain is changed, and only check if it is an allowed terrain when the maps are generated.

No, that screen and the Helicopter screen are the only I have.

Maybe, but not sure, they could give other bonuses as well.
