I am very concerned about the advisor and wonder movies
30 plus would go for Civ2. 30 plus also assumes a basic level of nonignorance which the general gaming public does not possess. Probably female as well. I was dismayed in the OT at the fact that the posters' favourite books were, in the majority, sci-fi. I'kll admit that I read a good deal of it when I was in HS, but I never considered most of it anything except the print form of entertaining spam. Then again, I didn't know what spam was (in the computer context) in HS, as the sole computer I had access to until 1995 was an Apple 2c.
I can give you a very good book recomendation for a replacement for Catcher In the Rye. In other words a book similar to Catcher...but good, not just hyped.
Which would impress a newbie more: civ2 real footage or SMAC stuff?
Definitely the SMAC stuff. While I skipped Civ2´s wonder movies after watching them the second time (except for the Hanging Gardens now and then), I can´t even imagine skipping the "Hunter Seeker Algorithm" video.
"As far as general advice on mod-making: Go slow as far as adding new things to the game until you have the basic game all smoothed out ... Make sure the things you change are really imbalances and not just something that doesn't fit with your particular style of play." - WesW
When I get my video card, I'll start doing my own wonder movies. Since I'm an award-winning video editor , I really expect them to be atleast as good as the Civ2 ones. Just a trip to the video section of my local library, a little code-tweaking and I'm there. I'll transfer them to anyone on demand, $5 each

Actually the reason for computer based movies are that they provide a lot more realism than your standard animation. Most of the computer generated films are just your normal animation flicks that are taking advantage of the latest technology - Toy Story, Bug's Life, Shrek, and others.
Of course than you have a film like Final Fantasy. It cost over a 100 million dollars and probably close to 200 million to setup the studio and make the film. Probably will recoup cost in Japan, but that is beside the point. It would have been cheaper to do it live and add some special effects. But it would not have fit.

At the heart of the discussion, the argument is about 'fluff'... what kind of fluff do you prefer: a cut scene movie or an in-game animation.
Don't get me wrong, fluff can add atmosphere to a game (I happen to enjoy a bit of fluff, under certain conditions), but it really doesn't add not subtract from the reason we all became civ fan in the beginning: gameplay.
I really could care less whether they are in or out, either option will be ignored in one way or another... the movies would have been turned off after seeing them, either by options or the grand space bar/i've seen this enough, and the new in game animation will be ignored by not looking at the groovy city view with the cool wonder animation after the 10,000th time...
And the advisors are editable ... that is something noone seems to want to touch at this point, both the pics and advice... that has some possibilities.

If there are some decent animations within the game then this is better. I find that movies within these games are not as seamlessly integrated into the game as an animation would be by their very nature (cuts you out of the game to watch a movie), so I approve of the animation. Of course they probably have movies to open with and end a game with...

I wish the movies were in. Generally, the SMAC movies are better, but they wouldn't be for Civ. Are all movies out, or just Wonder movies? Are wonders gradually built on the city view from turn to turn? Is the lack of movies a big reason why the game is only 100 MB? I would have been happy if it was 200.
