Nice thread resurrection!
I specially enjoy the Urban Ranger example Add some more, can be the best Civ III enhancement after the Culture addition"We are reducing all the complexity of billions of people over 6000 years into a Civ box. Let me say: That's not only a PkZip effort....it's a real 'picture to Jpeg heavy loss in translation' kind of thing."

I think the actual advances will have to split into different categories if you want some "non"- science ones to come along.
Else you may disover something like Advanced Superstring Economics or Quantum Cognitive Bushonics. One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

It would be cool to have all the disciplines mixed up occasionally. Future techs could be scientific/ artistic/ cultural all at the same time. Chromatic economics. Solar sculpture. Subatomic Psychology.
While it would be nice to have future techs that actually do something (esp in modern scenarios where research is no longer meaningful), it's probaly better that they don't. It could lead to too much "bouncing the rubble" -- when you get that far, you're usually ready to win and just running up the score.

Opinion seems to be generally against this though. *Shrug*
