Yes, but the AI gets nice as long as you have per turn trades with it (such as resources / luxuries)

Aah, hidden nationality. Gotta love it. Until multiplayer where your sea travel is ruined by someone, and it later turns out that it's your ally, backstabing you. ANYWAYS, I concur with PlagueRat. Stop getting so angry at me, AI!

I always build Privateers and always forget that they are hidden nationality and so get extremely annoyed with the AI when it sinks them.....

Privateers are relatively weak, and suddenly it becomes the weakest naval unit. (especially with the steam engine)
Thats a pity. We could have had much more fun with pirating if there was an upgrade...

Yeah, privateers were actually hyped before the release...

How about a Smuggler unit available with Combustion?

Oh, a Smuggler Yacht would be nice... They could carry explosives so when they ram. BOOOM (99,0,5)

Ya, it sucks that they are so weak. But they can be fun none the less.

they are only good for attacking galleys and even then they often lose. i like fortifying them if possible when you spot an enemy ship, and if that ship is scouting it will occasionally attack my privateer, hopefully losing.

Another thing you can do, especially now with PTW, is blockade a civ's coastal city, preventing it from sending out it's own ships.

yeah, and with a ROP you can do that anyways, i love blocking in sea and land units too that way. they dont seem to be angered either

The thing with PTW, if a civ orders you to remove your troops from their territory, any hidden nationality unit will still remain in place. That makes Privateers more valuable as far blockades are concerned.

I like to use a massed privateer attack to weaken the AI's attempt to beat me to that newly discovered Island that it somehow found out about.

i wish privateers could blockade port cities, even if you werent at war
