Yup - an excellent point. Hadn't thought of that. If we plunk a city down south - they will likely think it is being done for territorial expansioin reasons, as opposed to resource acquisition.
Question - if the only source is down in the southern mountains - do we build Chokepoint City or go for a southern site? My fear is that GS may try to expand north as quickly as possible to fence us in - and I would hate for a city laid down by GS on the south side of the mountain range to snag the only iron source, and they won't even know they have done it.

But you do have a valid point Beta...I guess we will see on our next turn where the iron is located (hopefully) and we can decide then.
