  • Turn 142, 260AD

    I'll be back later to fill some stuff in.

    * General Info
    - 1391 gold, +173 (at start of turn)

    * Military
    -

    * Economy

    - If we plan to upgrade sometime in the next three truns, we can start Arashi on a marketplace or library and switch to a knight when iron is available. Iron availability needs to be considered in that regard, though. Arashi can produce knights more efficiently than it can anything else.
    - ***Whirlwind - Shift laborer from incense hill to incense desert for this turn only. That gives enough shields and lets Monsoon borrow the incense hill.
    - O.G. - Shift laborers from desert to hills so we can finish our WC next turn.
    - ***Monsoon: Work all three hills, the whale, and an irrigated grassland. Next turn, Monsoon hands two of the hills to Whirlwind. Overall pattern for Monsoon is 10+5+5=20 shields.
    - ***Sandstorm: Shift two desert laborers to mountains this turn and then back next turn. (The idea is to have enough food the turn we grow to persuade the new laborer to land on a mountian.)
    - Typhoon - Switch to Horseman (for fewer wasted shields.
    - Santa Ana - Move laborer from bonus grassland to regular grassland.
    - Dissidentville - Move laborer from regular grassland to bonus grassland vacated by SA. (Gives us exactly the right number of shields for our granary in two turns.)
    - Blizzard - Switch to horseman (6x5=30 avoids shield waste)

    * Diplomacy
    - An active liason with RP is needed. Someone to keep in touch with Togas, Arnelos, and BigFree on an almost daily basis. Is someone up for it?

    * Additional info/Big issues.
    - FP in Elipolis underway.
    - Other big issue. How are we going to pay the gold for the upgrades? Can we out build our gold?
    - An active head of intelligence is needed. Someone to examine the saves every turn and report back significant information. We are not doing nearly enough of this. Is someone up for it?

      I'll offer to help with this, if a rookie can do the job .
      It might be that more experience is required ....

        Can I post here?

        Well, there is the checking of technology costs. Tech should be costing us 24 beakers per basis point. Set science slider to get close to 24 or 48 beakers, adjust a few cities to get in exact, then check the turns to research each unknown tech. That will tell us when techs unkonwn to us are discovered, and can tell us how many civs have those unknown techs.

        There is the demographics analysis. Every couple of turns we should check to see where the other civs are in Mfg and GNP. Not only will this tell us definitely when GoW and ND leave GA, but Lego is most likely coming up fast on these numbers and we should keep an eye on just how fast.

        Military strength should have a close eye kept on it as well. We could discuss some of the details of this by PM.

        Some of the other demographics numbers can be interesting to look into from time to time. It is amasing what you can do to keep track of the world through F11 and some of the advisors.

          Do you use IRC? ICQ? Are you on line a lot? Experience with the histories would be good, but actually doing it would be good.

          Perhaps you can work with another... Yoo hoo, another, where are you?

            On sober reflection ... I think my enthusiasm is preceding my usefulness at this point. Best for another who knows.

              received from Togas.

              NYE,

              Here is the final shot from our turn:

              There were no GS people online tonight when I did the save. Of note, we sent forth 3 regular pikes into the mountains to watch GoW and ND movements and to try to cut their road.

              Please let us know if you need us to send out any other scouts.

              We'll have a pike finished in Madrid this turn. We're going to rough it over the mountains into Pamplona unless otherwise told.

              Please let us know how the southern battles go.

                I like that RP pike-reccie/pillage stack. We need to peer into that darkness.

                Either we wait for a mother and father of a build-up on both sides, until they have gunpowder, or someone strikes. If they don't, surely we have to. For this, can we take up and defend advanced positions - or would their Rumsfeldian divisions then just rush past to our rear?

                Ideally, I'd like to push some Pike stacks forward on the high ground to observe and/or provoke an engagement and/or offer forward defensive positions. Get the enemy on the back foot, then RP's pike-swarms can influence the battlefield rather than skulking in Pamplona.

                I notice GoW are parading that Elite Rider up and down in Alamo for us ... any ideas as to how many Pikes could be in there?

                  I know I volunteered for the intel job, but my computer is not coooperating. I'm in the midst of a serious hardware crisis and dont have acess to the game. I'm on a backup laptop right now. Sigh. I have a hunch its the power supply, dells come only with a 250 watt, and I've slapped a lot of new stuff on it recently, a radeon 9200, more ram, a new harddrivev. the latter is what I tried yesterday. worked for a while, long enough to transfer most everything over, but then? who knows, now it won't even make it to the bios screen. sigh. I hate computers.

                    Opening 260 AD...
                    It should be in everyone's mailboxes by now.

                      We have completed six units this turn.
                      Sir Ennet the healthy veteran rider at Barca-4477.
                      I'm beginning to think that we should have sent one of our pikes near Pamplona to where that vet rider is right now, to prevent GoW from scouting so much.
                      I'm in favor of using our southern galley to scout Murcia, and if it turns out to be undefended, send one knight from Barca-411 that way to sack it next turn.

                        RP's moves were good. They should do a lot of those to put the enemy in the situation where it can either attack pikes on defensive terrain or forego important roads.
                        What can RP do next turn to put more heat on Alamo and force GoW to crank up their guard instead of hunting down our southern knights?

                        What's the plan for the southern knights?

                          If needed, I could volunteer to act as a liason to RP. I run into them anyway as part of my regular diplomatic work for the ISDG.

                            The anwer to "Can we outbuild our gold?" is profoundly "yes." We can produce WCs a lot more quickly than we can get the gold to upgrade them, so the question is one of force mix. By the way, if we don't want to be facing cavalry and muskets with knights and pikes, we need to be careful how long we stay in a "spend our gold on troops" mode.

                            I'd like to make it clear that about my only involvement in GS these days is trying to do a few micromanagement tweaks. Others need to be paying attention to issues of force mix, upgrade costs, and when to upgrade. I wish I had more hours in my days so I could do everything I'd like to, but I can't do more for GS without taking more time away from other things that have a lot higher potential value.
