  • Hum, BTW... this thread has gone over the 500 post limit by over a hundred posts. Maybe time to make a new one?

    • Not really, it's no more than a custom, and a slight degrading of load-time as the thread grows. Maybe the entire site would slow down if *all* threads were that long...

This was at a time, when our team was double in size as any other, and when we started to find out that our style (unanimous decisions for everything, a true democracy) was already cumbersome when everyone is considerate for other opinions. We really didn't want a troll in our midst, only trying to stirr op trouble without bringing anything interesting to the discussion.

I even forgot his hame, but perhaps somebody else remembers him.

Apart from that one which wouldn't be accepted to any team willing to read a couple of his posts, we accepted every single one who asked to join, even if they said beforehand they were going to be lurkers at most. Sure, many of those came from the strat or AU forum, but that's just because our other members are active there. It was not an elitist recruitment process.

BTW, I myself was contacted by alva, fp and Vel, who in the first place knew me from Candle'Bre, not the strat forum (of course, I got into CB through the strat forum). And more then a few of our members became more active in the strat forum after joining GS, not the other way around. It all kind of lead to the same thing, but there was no strategy at all to build an elite team, and we never felt like that either.

We do feel proud for our achievements, but I think everyone involved in this game should be proud of their achievements (and probably is too). That our achievements are perhaps more concentrated at game mechanical things is perhaps in our nature, it never was our goal.

Look, originally, the teams pretty much broke down according to the political parties in the first Demogame.

DIA by and large went to RP, Hawks, to GoW, Trip started under the same pretense as (I forget his parties' name). Lego was formed by those whom the DIA was even too aggressive. GS, alone, AFAIK, went out and actually recruited at all. The other parties were just here for people to see and join if they wanted. It was a vastly different method.

I remember TTA (GS, fyi) forming. I remember NYE posting he'ld PM'd some people to join him. I remember I did not receive a PM, having not joined anyone yet. I took it to mean I wasn't wanted. This most likely wasn't the case at all. NYE was getting people who didn't know about the demogame. Still, it certainly APPEARED you were hand picking a team. Allot of people thought that as evidenced by the posts back then.

GoW officially formed a little later, and I couldn't resist that team, having lead the Hawks for most of the demogame.

                  • The early invites for GS mostly came from me actually, and were almost exclusively Strat forum people, as I was not really involved in the first demogame at that time.

No offense meant to anyone... and I blithely ignored the consequences from a reputation perspective.

                    • well, like I said. I wasn't part of the original invites, but entered a couple of days later when the team was still too thin. Only after I joined everybody woke up, and nearly everyone accepted the invite. This was not foreseen.

And of course, the first day you get the feeling like you will kick everyone's ass (not just Trip's) because of all the talent gathered in one spot... but it quickly turned out that that is not true because we had specific skills, our lack in DG experience (and MP experience) was huge.

Plus, you also run into the 'too many cooks in the kitchen' problem. For most of this game, we managed to avoid it, by specialising in certain tasks. But in the beginning, some of our members were a bit sad that others took the front in certain tasks which they beleived they themselves were exceptionally good in. Others let it pass, GS has always had a very relaxed culture. And others waited their turn, I knew from the start I was a micromanager but I certainly wasn't going to obstruct Nathan's play (no use ), nor CH who is less of a MMer but plays other aspects of this game better then me.

                      • Actually, we took everyone who asked (except a known trouble maker) in our thread on this forum. We had to announce a stop at one point as we were getting way too big (over 30 people).

Yep - I remember him well. GS was wise not to take him. He was a pain in the a$$, but thankfully faded quickly.

Didn't he join just after or during our little skirmish?
