Which book does Rincewind die in? I thought I run them all and don't recall him actually dieing in any of them.
Some of my favorite characters are "Death of Rats" and the lady-were wolf that's a member of the guard.
There's also a troll who they kept liquid nitrogen in his helmet because the troll's brain works at the optimum tempature very close to absolute zero.

Beta, it is a series of books written by Terry Pratchett, and there are about 33+ in total. All of them are set on the Disc, but there are severaal different leaad charateres in the series.
for Example, the is Rincewind, a "Wizzard" so inept that when he finally dies (i.e. someone actually catches him after he runs away) that the net magical ability of the human species will increase.
There is also the Witches, the Guards, Death, and an assortment of books where the main characters are newly created, and he has written two childreens books into the series (the only differeence in writting style in them is that Pratchett is less cynical), although recently all of the stories have Ankh Morpork as the main background.
I suggest that you have a look at the books. I started reading them when I was eight, and I still reread them now. Best writer I have ever seen

AI: I sure wish Jon would hurry up and complete his turn, he's been at it for over 1,200,000 milliseconds now.
Also note that the novels in the disk world series is generaly NOT divided into chapters. But the books are rather long to read in one setting so you need to pick your own places to stop.
The most recent book not centered on Ankh Morpork that I'm aware of is "Monstrous Regiment"
About a lady who joins the army in disquise as a man to go rescue her brother during a war. Soon, she discovers she's not the only female in the regiment in disquise ...
(It is note worthy that in the middle ages, several ladies did successfully join armies in disquise and were thought to be young males too young to need to shave.) The outfits for soliders then were extremely baggy by todays standards. It is also a matter of historic record about one lady fighting in the Southern army during the US Civil War. (A couple of years after the war she was arrested for prostitution and asked about her past.)

Or just head over to your local bookstore and buy a copy of "The Colour Of Magic" ... then read "The Light Fantastic", "Equal Rites", "Guards, Guards", and "Mort". Then decide if you like the series or not (as you'll have been introduced to most of the main characters in the series now).
The series, other than being hilarious and well written, is sort of unique in that it has multiple storylines written essentially independently of each other in the books; you can generally read all of the books of one "storyline" and ignore the others if you want.
Storylines (main characters therein):
Rincewind (The Colour Of Magic, The Light Fantastic, etc.)
Captain Vimes et al. (Guards! Guards!)
The Witches (Equal Rites)
Death/Mort ("Mort")
There are also three or four books with none of the above characters in them, and several with more than one of the above characters in them.
Terry Pratchett has been inaccurately compared to Douglas Adams and Piers Anthony. He's not like either one, although fans of both often like him.

The Prachett Novel "Monstrous Regiment" contains a lot of true facts once you leave out the non-humans. Except perhaps about the sock tied near the front of the belt. And it's also a given that the chances of one disquesed lady solider encortuing others in the same unit were pretty low.

Ok. Thanks. It is usually difficult to pry me away from my hard-core SF, or history, but I have read some of the genre you have described, and I do enjoy it. And I think I have read some Piers Anthony, and of course, Douglas Adams.
If you like Douglas Adams and are lamenting the fact that he only wrote seven novels before his death, Terry Pratchett helps. Like Adams he has a hilariously sideways look on the world but unlike Adams, Pratchett keeps churning them out. (PG Wodehouse is another tonic for 'underfed' Douglas Adams fans.)

The lack of chapters never bothered me. I'd usually stop reading at the point my tube train reached the station!
"Monstrous Regiment" is awesome - as were the previous two - "Night Watch" and "Thief of Time".
I might be wrong about Rincewind, but I think the author has outgrown that character. Sir Samuel Vimes is now the star of the show, but Pratchett has a superb new character in Igor.

hehe no kidding Vimes is definitely the star now.
He doesn't have 'chapters' per se, but there are breaks every time he shifts focus. That's like a chapter.
And i'm not sure what you mean (jon) about them being long, they're pretty fast reads to me, it takes around a day to read one for me, maybe 2 at the very most, and i mostly read on the bus (1hr each way)
