  • Large World playing 2.42

If I have a few minutes to spare my mouse finds its way to the Civ2 icon on my desktop. Such was the start of this game, which I played last summer. I began playing mechanically and with little thought. Soon I realised that with some concentration it could be a great game.

At around 2000BC I started again! I knocked centuries off my previous Large World best for an AC landing.

I have included the 4000BC start below.

The map is a standard Large World on 2.42 playing Deity and Raging Hordes. You play as The Vikings. I will post my final position in a week or so if anybody is interested. I did keep a basic log of the re-started game. There is a decent place for the SSC and many huts!

How do you get these maps?....all these little islands with my massive one

I played till 1ad.Not doing real good bit not real bad.Highlight is having 20+ cities in Monarchy with no Garden's or Mich's

I only have Cope's and Collosus built.

Its a fun map though.Tons of good city sites. Its hard to stop and develop a bit.
The only thing that matters to me in a MP game is getting a good ally.Nothing else is as important.......Xin Yu

      11 downloads

It seems that the 4000BC savegame sent by SG2 has been d/loaded 11 times. If 11 players play it after him, it will be nice to compare. I have a go NOW.

I liked the map! I don't think I've ever found so many huts on a random start.

what is your advice SG(2) ?

I have now played until 1000AD.
Shall I publish a log? or savegames? or both? or nothing?
I wouldn't like to run the risk of spoiling this game for anyone.
Please, SG(2), could you tell us how you intend to handle this?

            Hi La Fayette!

Post a log when you have finished the game along with the save of your final position - the year before you land.

              help

I have now come close to the end of this game, but...
I have a large scale problem of managing research faster than 1 tech/turn. I remember having read discussions on this topic between learned OCCers but I don't manage to find them.
Could someone give me a lesson in high-speed research (more than 1 tech/turn)?

(La Fayette, remembering that Eyes told him he was a rookie)

                more help

                One more question:
how can I change the name of the leader (so as not to mix my savegames when I do some testing)?

I think one of the tricks in obtaining high speed research is to have your science city "report" as number 7 or 8, so that you don't waste its beakers when you get a discovery.

So, one of your minor science cities fills the science box, then the SSC starts filling up the box for the new tech.

I wouldn't bet my life on it, though!

So, depending on what determines the reporting order of your cities (size, age, alphabetically?) you should make sure the SSC is not the one that makes the discovery.

                    Or am I way off?

I've done it with Norton FileFind, an ancient DOS utility that allows for search and replace of a string within a file. Any other file utility that allows byte-by-byte changes to a file would work, but I don't know of any to recommend: I'm still mired in the 1980s.

Reporting order is determined by the order they were settled. Specifically, in reverse - your capitol is the last in the list.

La Fayette - go to Your Computer/Hard Drive/MPS - here you will see all the files in 2.42. Create a New Folder from the file menu and name it tests or anything you like. Then you can store all your "off game" saves here.

Save the original as a scenario. You have to get into cheat mode to do this. When you restart the scenario, you can change some parameters like level and leader name. After that, all saves will start with the new leader name.

Dave, the more I see, the more I think you and I could be good buddies.
