It helps the game a lot IMO.
1. No official alliances are allowed. So there is no unbreakable treaties. People do make trade and tech stealing treaties, but since they're just treaties, they do get broken.
2. The first two people to meet don't automatically win. And to make it better, 50% (guessing) of the time the fist encounter turns into a conflict. Anything that encourages fighting makes for a better game.
3. GAMES MOVE QUICKER since two players aren't spending half their turn in the diplo screens. Since maps are traded less frequently, machine response time doesn't degredate. (since the machine doesn't have to continually update unit movement)
4. Tech stealing becomes much more important.
5. The wonder races are more fun, because "ONE TEAM" doesn't end up with all of them.
6. Since there is no tech trading, you can actually build units and have then not be obsolete by the time they get to the front.
