i think suez and panama should be open toi assist in sea movement ....

Mid east is fine by me...

Dont have a problem if some on wants australia , the aborigines can become the great nation they always dreamed off

i think 7 players is the minimum we need and we need to grab a few subs....

I think it would make the game more interesting if we couldn't just cut through suez and panama. But one civ could build a city at each and get access, this would make these spots of great strategic importance and would lend itself to much diplogaming.

Allies could use the canal (through temporary city gifting) and tolls could be charged to non-allies for whoever holds these spots.

Plus it'd be far more realistic historically. The trip around Africa or S. America would still be possible since we'd increase ship movement by 2 or 3, but having the canals open I'd think would be unrealistic and impractical.

My vote is cast, what does everyone else think?

This is not a vote since I don't play, but I think you should keep the canals open becuse it is not practical to swap cities every time you need a ship to pass. Turns last as it is.

Whoever builds a city near the canal can easily block it with properly positioned ships, one or two. And if someone can not defend a canal, he should not be able to block it just because he has a city there. Hell with realism, it just sucks.

Increased ship movement is a good thing. I wouldn't be shy of 3 points more than normal.

Ship movment is not too bad during the early years, as they last a hundred years or so. but as the turns shortne in historic length and the ships still have limited movmement it is a problem. I suggest perhaps not all ships get extra movment leave triremes as they are but increase all others.

Can see both sides of the argument as far as the canals goes. I dont like the idea of city gifting to let allies pass, but i do like the idea of blocking the canal with ship.

Its a pity we cant have them closed for early history and then open later in game as was historically done.

have started the story thread ready for this great game. see hotw4

seems we have some definates ready to play.

Ozzy seems eager to make the map and the modpack to make it all work. I will leave it to him and deity to work out the nitty gritty of any rule change sor unit changes necessary. once complete we can list them all on apolyton and include the map and modpack.

Any other players interested in joiining please let us know so we can start discussions and get agrreement on times of play and who gets what civ

Remember we are after not necessarily the greatest civ players her efor this one, but people who can perform a role, live the game so to speak. we want people who can post a story regularly.

Demographics and such like that wil lbe posted regularly

One sugeestion from previous hotw2 was for a listing of city improvements, perhpas we can do that later in game once we are well under way in modern times, a spreadsheet listing all such stuff is interesting to compare.

I have webspace available to keep the stuff together too so i volunteer to do that , providing everyone send sthe information to me. The progessive map as shown on drakes page was good too, not sure who mnade that so if anyone can do same would be appreciate dfor this one.

See ya at the screen sooon

              My suggestions for the game….

For Time how about Thursday nights from 7:00 EST -- 11:00 EST, does that work? if we can start earlier the better but if not then this time works for me. I don’t want to give up my social nights on Friday and Saturday. Thursday is not great for me but it works better than any other night I have.

Keep the Canals open, that way the powers that control them have to constantly enforce them with ships instead of landing a settler and claiming it first. Don’t care about ship movement, everyone will adapt to whatever we decide.

For rules I suggest 1x1x. King. And play as a Diplo game, not so much oriented towards war and conquest unless it makes sense. (I.E. no other option, for key strategic gain, no complete conquest.) Other than that I would not suggest regulating the game with Tech Trading/Alliance rules, they never work well in a diplo game, limits the options available.

Its a bit early to be making the story thread...

We don't even know who is playing yet. Or when it will be, or even if this thing will get off the ground!

I could do Prom's times most nights.

Ok, if everyone wants open canals, thats fine. I'm not sure I'd be the best to do the mod-pack. I could give it a shot though.

I can do the still maps, and can again for this game. But i dunno how to put them together into an animation. This is of less urgency to figure out than settings and who is playing and such.

I insist on 1x1x, my vote goes to Emporer as a compromise between the King and Deity folks. No opinion on Barbs.

So far we only have Prom, Raz, Deity, ljcvetko and I interested. Gotta find 2 more.

I guess he was just really, really itching to use that intro story and didn't want to get beat to it. So created the story thread way early.

Actually, you can quite easily: you just need to write an event (in the events.txt file) that will change the desired spot to ocean at the time of your choosing!

BTW: great to see that HOTW is back: reading HOTW2 is what brought me to Poly!! I'm kind of a fan

When your map is ready and you know which squares (coordinates) will be changed, and at which turn, just tell me and I might even be nice enough to do it for you!!

But you need to use this file before you start your game!

7pm USA Thurs night is great for me.

                              Yes to that Events thingy

I used that once in a scn. Must go and remind myself...

Cyrion, being such a fan and all, would you be interested in playing?

The events thing sounds great, but I wouldn't know how to set it up. I can get you the coordinates, and prepare the map, however I'm not sure what turn it should be... hmm....

It is possible we set up some other stuff with that event? Like maybe instead of make it triggered by time, we could do something to initiate it. Like build rails and irrigate a specific square. That would require us to actively participate in some action, and since it would require rails it would make sure it was at the appropriate time. Also, since both projects were costly in terms of money and lives if the square turned to ocean immediately and sunk the settler on that square that'd be a very interesting idea too. Something as great as the Panama or Suez canal do not happen without risks.

Could we also... link it to a wonder? Oh, thats a great idea Ozzy! The Eiffel Tower could trigger the opening of the canals. That'd be fantastic. Put it in the right time period, have some cost, and actually make use of that otherwise worthless wonder.

Maybe Eiffel AND the settler/railroad thing. Or just Eiffel. Or... I like this idea.
