  • is there a mod that has more citie names than the ones included int he original game?

Don't let my name fool you, i've played this game ever since it came out. This name is meant for Civ3 only

On my previous computers I've created and lost these lists. lists of hundreds of US cities (you know, for that occasional game where you bombard everything into extinction...). Doing so is extreemly time consuming, and I would like to know if there is a mod that has severeal dozen (or hundred) more cities listed in the City.txt file.

Oh yes, I did perform a search in the MODs area, but by some reason I kept getting results from Civ3 and CTP I & II along with Civ2 MODs. The MODs were not what I am looking for though, so I came out empty handed.

    Thnx for any help though.

IIRC there is not a 'mod' to do this, but several posters have published lists of many city names which can be cut and pasted into the city.txt file...

What SG[1] said, except I did it the hard way: I pulled out a world atlas and went from there (then had to rename three Indian cities when the RL government changed their names).

The easiest way might be this one :
There are sites with huge lists of towns and you can copy/paste them
If I remember, the one from the UN offers a list of at least 100 towns for each country.
I might find back the link if you ask

And those mods for other civ games should work just fine too... They'll obviously not be in the correct format, but it can't be that different, city names are city names... so you can copy-paste from those mods as well. (In other words, you'll have to DO something! )

could someone post a city.txt file with a larger list of names? I'm lazy. Is there a maximum number of names for the file, or for a civ?

There shouldn't be one in that file. The practical limit is 255/civ (the limit for the number of cities-- hardcoded, sadly).

Aren't those 255 names distributed over the different civilizations? The actual list per civ is rather short.

Yes... 255 is the total max. Which means that if you make a list of 255 cities for each civ, you are certain to never have any doubles. So that would be the practical limit for the number of city names to give to each civ.

... Or perhaps not quite, there's always the possibility that some of your cities get destroyed (or cities might even get destroyed regularly ).

                        EDIT: My 1000th post!

King Arthur: I am your king!
Woman: Well, I didn't vote for you.
King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.
Woman: Well, 'ow did you become king then?
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king!
Dennis: Listen... strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
                        King Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis: Well you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
                        King Arthur: Shut up!
Dennis: I mean, if I went around sayin' I was an empereror just because some moistened bink had lobbed a scimitar at me they'd put me away!
King Arthur: Shut up! Will you shut up!
Dennis: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system.
                        King Arthur: Shut up!
Dennis: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system! HELP! HELP! I'm being repressed!
                        King Arthur: Bloody peasant!
Dennis: Oh, what a give away. Did you here that, did you hear that, eh?.... That's what I'm on about... did you see him repressing me, you saw it didn't you?

Then i really don't see a problem here. There's a 255 city max (well, in Civ2 anyway) so why would you need more names past that? Even considering a few of those get raised.

Well, the standard city list only has like 20-50 cities per civ, so that's why he wants a longer one.
