  • Hard times, indeed!

I'd hold off on Demo until Mr Bach settles down at the piano, in his sequined shirt and boa.

And if we're in Demo/Republic, units are at a premium, so they might as well be the BEST units... anyone for Leo?

But we are in Demo--at least for now.

You bring up a good point about Leo. How many vets would we lose against 13 upgrades to musket, etc. Looks good to me.

What about Cope's, etc, in 2 whales?? An SSC would surely help our science rate. What do you think??

I'm still considering the board. I may do a few turns in Demo, since we are already here. This will enhance any deliveries and add a few pops. Then I think Fundy, temples, pile up cash; add white goods to prepare for a proper celebrating Demo. If the Vik's are in fact building Walls, then I'd like to take what I can before they complete them.

      • I like Copes. And I like Leos. And I realize we're in Demo, I was just bringing my brilliant hindsight to bear, along with a Bach-as-Liberace joke that went unnoticed

Since we're in Demo now... and you intend to stay in it... it makes perfect sense to crank out 14 zero-unhappiness food 'vans for Leo and Nicky Copernicus, and deliver a few more vans around the empire and overseas...

Alternatively... if you're leaving Demo for Fundy, we'd probably be better off building Lee's Cathedral (JSB) instead of Copernicus. High science and Fundamentalism don't mix... Copernicus would be underutilized. JSB in Fundy=+2 tithes/city.

        • I got the joke and it's pretty good; better if JSB was an option now. Theology is only a rumor ATM.

And my view of going Fundy, if at all, would be temporary, to build up the cash to buy the white goods needed to celebrate--in Democracy. Maybe enough can be made from trade to avoid Fundy; still studying the save...and hoping for a bit more leg from the rabbit.

With only ten turns we need to make a pass at working toward a common goal, IMHO. Otherwise, a lot of time gets wasted shifting back and forth. That's why I asked for input from -Jr. so I might understand enough to honor his intent by continuing in the flow he started.

Similarly, nothing started by me will complete in my turns. And yes, I know this is a SXN and not Democracy Game. Nothing is intended by me to limit anyone's choices. I don't have a problem with guiding the development according to the next guy's preference if I understand the intent.

If nobody wants to chime in, I'll run with what I see.

          • Maybe you should ask Hydey then

Myself - sure, we could steamroll over the Vikings, particularly with Leos and a beeline to Steam/Leadership - but I like the idea of trading until our fingers bleed and building a fast spaceship, down the road. When I first saw the map, and all the river/ocean squares we'd be working... I figured a small trade empire would work well, rather than a sprawling ICS military juggernaut. So Republic/Demo is fine by me.

Besides, Theology can't be that far away, if we have Demo?

              • Mea maxima culpa

                Bloody Monk --
Let me start by saying that, while neither is a decent excuse, I was very tired by the end of things, and yes, I have a really obnoxious cold. A rare day home from the office today...

Sorry about the dodgy save technique. Thanx for fixing.

As for the poorly-run change to Demo, I have no excuse. Figured that you'd make the needed adjustments before changing the year and we'd be home free.

Pretty stupid, I agree. I recall a thought process (if it can be called such) along the lines of "Well, we're in Republic, which is much tougher to run than Demo, and all those extra arrows (no corruption) will be huge for us. So this should be easy. Besides, we have SOL, so the next player will just do as he pleases anyway."

In reality, all I was trying to do was get us the SOL so we'd be free to trash the Vikings. Yeah, that means Fundy (the reason we acquired several temples). But I hit Demo based on the need to grow.

BTW, Theology appeared in the last 2 tech choice screens, so we're still 2 techs away from it as an option.

And yeah, it was the cannons that swayed me to Metallurgy. (Not my normal choice.)

Did I think it through the gov't change? Absolutely not. If I had it to do all over, I'd have just left us in Repub for you to work your magic on.

Now it's your job to fix it, my place to apologize.

C'est la joie de la Succession...

                  • Actually, no. That was not my intent; and, you can tell by his response that -JMAN didn't take it as a rip, either. Tough love for a King level brother who, I was sure, was playing sick, or somehow off his game.

If you read his response...When I read your response -J, I can't help but be impressed by the straightforward way you owned the truth. That shows a huge degree of character. If there was any hurt in what I wrote I am sorry. And I hope you feel better soon.

I spent most of today in a memorial for the Astronauts and am getting a late start on the game. Hope to post later tonight.

I've looked and looked trying to make Democracy work now, but I don't think it will be as good as Fundy. The lack of infra-structure and food means only six cities can celebrate even one turn, and that requires 60% Lux. With Fundamentalism, 34 shields get freed up from support and cash will increase.

                        1--Change to Fundy Gov't

2--My view is that the Vikings must die
Their big land mass should be ours, and sooner is better if they are building walls.

3--Big push to build Leo's...many white goods changed to camels
Later, aim for JSBach enabling Demo if desired.

4--Use Fundy cash, deliveries, and plunder to rush temples, harbors, and aquaducts so a growing Democracy will be possible if desired

5--Go after the Russians and Spanish and look to trade with the Babs and Chin later.

6--Have fun and hope for the best

BM -- no hard feelings. Your read on the situation was accurate.

Hey, I do this for fun. I had my fun. (Even attained *most* of my goals.) Now the rest of the team will have their fun.

I've seen a number of ppl walk away from activities and discussions -- in a snit -- on 'Poly after taking criticism or when things otherwise did not go their way. It always amazes me that it's taken so personally.

I mean, I love Civ2 and think I generally have a clue in running a decent game. But I know I've got a lot to learn. And after all,
