Wombat, you always say that PCs magically make for better posting.
How?
Where?
I contribute to the game forums (General, scenario league, spanish, Mp games), and PC doesn't mean Jack-sh1t to those people.
The only ones who care are the Off-Topics bunch, of which I am also a member.
I don't buy your argument at all.
There is no reason, outside of the punishment for spamming by PCR, for their exsistence.
My count is close to 3,000, and at least half of it came in the Off-Topics, playing the word associations, or the music games and such, not by quality posting.
However, the rest are in the games forum, about the games.
The quality of said posts has zero to do with Post Count.
PC is meaningless.
I only need it for the custom avatar.

Wombat, don't tell me everyone is posting here because they like post counts.
No, just that it an extra incentive to push people into posting an non-essential post, especially with a slow connection, or if they pay for call-time.
Maybe I exaggerated a bit...

No, just more posting. Spam is fun to watch, its fun to watch being closed, its fun to watch people getting PCRs. Everyone knows that PC doesn't give status, so no-one sees it as status. Its just an added feature of the boards

but the problem is that it affects the quality of posts.
Erm...
Eli
Sorry, post counts are part of the fun. And without fun I dont need this place.
Who left when post-count was introduced? It gives an extra reason for staying. I would stay whether post-count existed or not, because I post a lot in the CTP2 boards, and a bit in the CTP boards, and my post-count isn't that important to me, but I still think it is a good thing.
I contribute to the game forums (General, scenario league, spanish, Mp games), and PC doesn't mean Jack-sh1t to those people.
Nor to me. It doesn't mean anything, it afford no status or even knowledge or experience, but even without meaning, for some people, its an added incentive to post, and what trouble does it do?

I agree actually, but rather than responding by abolishing it, why not keep it? It does no harm, and if it means more people post more, then keep it. Spam isn't hurting anyone. People know who spams, and that PC is meaningless, so no-one cares that Infatuation has 5000 posts or whatever.
Outside the OT, people with a high PC have obviously been there a while anyway, and regardless of spam and OT poor-quality Word Association Threads (Aren't they fun ), people who have been here a while get to the higher titles without even trying, and their words come with experience.
If everyone knows PCs are meaningless, why bother abolishing them? Keep them for their advantages.

Wombat, I don't think there are many people who believe the point of a forum is watching spam and people reacting on it. Even less that it is fun.
You said pc's doesn't have negative effects and causes no problem, but you do say it encourages spam and many to most consider spam as negative, otherwise we wouldn't have had 3 mods in OT battling it.
If you're afraid people stop posting if pc's are abolished, then why do you say nobody bothers about pc's in the first place?
And in case that wasn't obvious, perhaps people post here because they like to talk about stuff, such as civ2, politics or whatever? You don't talk to people in real life to jack up one or another score do you?
If you want pc's as an indication of longevity, why not just do the obvious and look at the date they registered?
It's not as if I consider pc's the being the evil of all evils, but all things taken together it's pointless and has a negative effect (except for those who enjoy spam) and that seems enough reason to abolish it.

Wombat, I don't think there are many people who believe the point of a forum is watching spam and people reacting on it. Even less that it is fun.
I didn't say it was the point of the forum.
It really really depends on the definition of spam. There is very little spam on Apolyton, because there are 3 OT moderators, and more admins, keeping the forums spam-free. Most people who have been here any time will know that spam is a waste of everyone's time, and will act responsibly.
Fun-posting is FUN. Most of the time it is humerous, and a lot more worth reading than some serious posts I've seen.
Spam for spam's sake is mostly perpetrated by DL's, who are obviously not motivated by postcount because they get banned usually after about five posts.
You said pc's doesn't have negative effects and causes no problem, but you do say it encourages spam and many to most consider spam as negative, otherwise we wouldn't have had 3 mods in OT battling it.
I actually said it encourages more posting. Maybe I wasn't very clear. I meant that of the posting it encourages, roughly the same proportion of it will be spam, but most will still be good quality posts. Look at ACOL as an example of a post-count free forum. Look at all those quality threads, with no hint of spam, no hint of anything but a serious debating forum where people can talk politics or Civ2 or whatever Abolishing post-count won't do anything to stop those who spam for spams's sake, and it wont stop fun-posters from having a laugh.
If you're afraid people stop posting if pc's are abolished, then why do you say nobody bothers about pc's in the first place?
Nobody but Eli then...

When did I deny this ?

I have no objection to that. Maybe we could compromise at Chris' and your suggestions combined?
A number and a date?

Wombat, I don't object posting, I don't object fun-posting and I'm well aware that spamming isn't solely due pc's, only that pc's encourages posting for the sake of it, which mostly expresses itself in dumb spamming. (don't tell me you enjoy seeing a "post count +1" post)
May I remind you that these boards were installed here because the site owners wanted to offer the possibility for people to talk about civ2 (and eventually other games and OT) and people will continue to talk and have fun without pc's, because they are after all humans. There are more than enough examples of vibrant boards without pc's.

Unless it followed by a MarkG "postcount = postcount -20" post. But no, that is a waste of time for everyone.

I'm sure you are right, and Apolyton will not suffer from the abolition of pcs, but it is a feature of the forums that many people like myself, like.

Immortal I'm sure you like it and other seem to do as well but I still don't feel you've explained why you like it. (but I appreciate the attempt)
Can I assume it's just the joy of seeing a (rising) score? It still wouldn't make sense but at least I can understand that.
Besides, I'm not going to cry for it if pc's stay. (it's not up to me to make the decision either) I think it's causes annoyances but there are more important issues.
