I'm sure there will be plenty of complaints...

Don't stupid advertisers know that they make people LESS likely to buy their product when they annoy them?

Ok here's the logic -- I am going to associate my product/brand name with a feeling of annoyance. That'll get people to want it!! It's kinda like a TV commercial with a soundtrack of someone scaping their nails on a blackboard. Quality stuff.

In order to have an accurate image of the issue, please send an e-mail to irex@gamestats.com stating your name, e-mail and the reason of your concern or the specific problem caused by this pop-up
<img src="/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>Done, and I urge everyone who posted to this thread to do the same. It wasn't hatemail after all btw just an overview of the problems I have with the popup.

I cannot even see the ad, the url doens't get through.

Anyway, this whole advertising thing on the internet is going to end. As Ugo shows, most of these ads are to attract traffic to their sites and the reason they want more traffic is to get more advertising income, that comes from ... yes.
It's just a bubble, going to collapse when the venture capitalists get their sense back.

The disdvntage probably will be that much of the stuff that's free on the net right now won't be so anymore.

          BTW: I hate the popups

I've just downloaded and installed proxomitron. Not perfect, but it seems to prevent the pop-up most of the time. I like the fact that you can choose when to open it. If this pop-up nonsense continues, I'm going to add it to my start-up menu.

Minimizing the pop-up doesn't work for me with Netscape 4.6

My complaint was sent to the link that Markos provided. Let's hope for an early, and favorable, resolution to this nonsense.

Don't wanna write? Copy and paste this one!

                ============================================

                Dear Gamestats,

Along with a number of frustrated users, I am making a request to remove the UGO pop ad that is appearing on the Apolyton Civilization Site <http:\\apolyton.net>. This is a Macromedia pop up ad featuring "Whirlgirl." Not only is this ad instrusive and annoying, it is also causing many of our browsers to crash. Furthermore, you should be aware that many angry users are now installing KillAd software on their desktops. Not only is the "WhirlGirl" ad being killed, but now EVERY OTHER ad is also. Normally these users felt it wasn't necessary to use such software, but they cannot be blamed for resorting to it now. Surely this is not good for Gamestat ad revenue.

Even lurking users have come forward to vent about the issue because they were so frustrated. See the following thread:
                http://apolyton.net/forums/Forum20/HTML/000803.html

Please, this is not only degrading your users' faith in the reputation of their host, but also is killing your revenues as well. The Apolyton site owners are taking alot of heat for this.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

                Your Name

I've sent an e-mail complaining about the Whirlgirl pop-up.

I'm with the others: I can't handle having to click it off every time the screen changes. And I'm not about to track down some solution for it at some other site.

This is a great site, but not if the pop-ups continue.

I just sent my e-mail also. I detest pop-ups. But I'm too lazy to download and configure another piece of software. I hope they are discontinued soon.

                      • I'm going to be writing too. I came to the forum earlier today, but that popup was so annoying, I left. I can understand if it pops up when you first come to this site, but does it have to popup EVERY TIME the screen changes?

It's more annoying than black flies on a hot summer day.

                        • What I find even more inflammatory is the fact that access is barred to anyone outside of the US. This is discriminatory, as well as the ad being annoying. I am emailing FORTHWITH.

                          • Okay, this is getting SERIOUS now. That wretched pop up crashed a game of civ multiplayer last night. It hung ALL our machines (4players - we had Apolyton running in the backgorund as usual ). I have Never seen this happen before.

This is going to TOO FAR

                            THIS MEANS WAR

And its all very well to say we should write, we will, but its your business that this is hurting.
